Dozens of small earthquakes have struck across Southern California within the past 24 hours, including more than 80 <\/a>quakes occurring in Los Angeles County, local officials say.<\/p>\n

The region was hit by six earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater during this time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey<\/a>. The strongest of these quakes was a 3.4-magnitude recorded off the coast of Catalina Island early Saturday morning.<\/p>\n

The quakes started Friday with a 2.5-magnitude earthquake<\/a>, which struck 3.7 miles southwest of Ojai in Ventura County at 10:46 p.m. Hours later, a 2.7-magnitude earthquake<\/a> shook the Los Angeles neighborhood of Westmont, east of LAX, at 12:34 a.m. Saturday.<\/p>\n

At 4:03 a.m., a 2.6-magnitude earthquake<\/a> struck roughly 17 miles southeast of Avalon. A 3.0 hit the same area<\/a> at 4:11 a.m. The two quakes were followed by the larger 3.4-magnitude quake<\/a> that struck near Catalina Island at 4:13 a.m.<\/p>\n

At 4:32 a.m., another small quake (2.6 magnitude<\/a>) occurred near Westmont at 4:32 a.m.\u00a0<\/p>\n

These are the largest earthquakes to hit the region in the past 24 hours. However, more than six dozen smaller earthquakes shook the area during this period.<\/p>\n

A map of the earthquakes provided by the USGS shows the region covered in dots representing the recent earthquakes. The Westmont region has been especially active, the map shows.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The most recent earthquake to hit the Los Angeles area was a 1.8-magnitude quake<\/a> that struck at 2:29 p.m.<\/p>\n

The State of California<\/a> and County of Los Angeles<\/a> have a number of resources available for earthquake preparedness. Residents of the state are encouraged to always be prepared for a major earthquake, which could occur at any time.<\/p>\n

According to a recent study<\/a>, the San Andreas Fault and San Jacinto Fault Zone are at their highest stress levels in 1,000 years.<\/p>\n
