OBITUARY

Marcia Berkhover lived a life defined by independence, adventure, hard work, and a deep commitment to her family. Although she once told her son that without her children she would have had no purpose in life, her life story shows that her sense of purpose extended far beyond motherhood. Work–both inside and outside the home–gave her meaning, friendships, and opportunities to keep learning.

The daughter of Joseph Wilbur Brookover and Mary Belle Graham, Marcia was born to modest circumstances in San Rafael, California. Yet she managed to attend the University of Northern Colorado, graduating with a teaching credential in 1963. Later that year, she married Richard Sadlier and began life as a Navy wife.

Marcia and Richard had two children, Virginia (Ginger) and Sean. Their military life took them to nine homes in ten years, including a duty station in Puerto Rico. Marcia participated in the officers’ wives club and volunteered through Catholic Charities. She also helped coordinate Navy SeaBee projects that improved housing for locals.

After divorce in 1976, Marcia moved to Chicago in 1978 with her children. She became the only woman working on the axle line building heavy equipment. She then returned to school and started a 20-year career as a paralegal.

Marcia used her sewing skills to stretch the family budget. When Sean needed transportation to his senior prom, Marcia borrowed a large Mercedes, fashioned a chauffeur’s uniform, and secretly drove the young couple to the dance.

Her modest upbringing also shaped her compassion. She often gave money to people experiencing homelessness and reminded her children that circumstances could change for anyone.

After moving to La Mesa in 1997, Marcia continued working until retiring from clerical and paralegal jobs in 2007. Rather than simply stop, she became a physical trainer specializing in seniors. Later, she worked crowd management at San Diego sports venues, eventually becoming an usher at Pechanga Arena. She loved the variety of sports, concerts, comedy, and performances.

Marcia’s life was not defined by a single role. She was a mother, student, military wife, factory worker, paralegal, trainer, and lifelong learner. Above all, she pursued a life of purpose on her own terms–with determination, compassion, curiosity, and an enduring zest for adventure.

Marcia Berkhover OBITUARY Marcia Berkhover lived a life defined by independence, adventure, hard work, and a deep commitment…

[28
74,76,75
post-462423","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-diego","tag-san-diego","tag-san-diego-headlines","tag-san-diego-news
["GET
