\u201cThese findings show why California\u2019s Latino registered voters cannot be understood as a single political constituency,\u201d G. Cristina Mora, a study co-author, sociology professor and co-director of UC Berkeley\u2019s Institute of Governmental Studies,<\/a> said in a news release.<\/p>\n Patterns revealed by the study deserve national attention, Nicholas Vargas, another study co-author, said in the release.<\/p>\n Parties competing for Latino voters \u201cshould not assume that Latinas and Latino men \u2014 or voters of the same age and educational background \u2014 are responding to the political environment in the same way,\u201d said Vargas, an associate professor of Chicanx\/Latinx studies at UC Berkeley.<\/p>\n One of the nation\u2019s fastest-growing ethnic groups, Latinos are a crucial voting bloc in California and nationwide.<\/p>\n Traditionally, Latinos lean Democratic. That changed in 2024<\/a>, when Trump won a substantial share of the Latino vote to take back the White House.<\/p>\n Polls show that Latinos, angry about inflation and the economy, are souring on Trump<\/a> and favoring Democratic candidates ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections<\/a>. That could influence races in Southern California and especially the Inland Empire, where a slight majority of residents are Latino.<\/p>\n Using data from a May poll of 1,912 voters in California, the study found that the gender gap in political attitudes among U.S. male and female voters extends to Latinos and Latinas.<\/p>\n California has a plurality of voters who are registered Democrats. California Latinas are registered as Democrats at higher rates than California Latinos, the study found.<\/p>\n Sixty-nine percent of Latina voters said protecting immigrant communities is very important, according to the study. Just 52% of Latinos said the same.<\/p>\n Latinas also are more likely to oppose Trump\u2019s agenda. Almost seven out of 10 Latinas surveyed said fighting the White House is very important, compared to 51% of Latinos, the study found.<\/p>\n Majorities of both genders \u2014 77% of Latinos and 87% of Latinas \u2014 said protecting democracy and voting rights is very important, the study read.<\/p>\n The study also found differences based on age and education.<\/p>\n \u201cYounger Latinas consistently express more progressive views than younger Latino men,\u201d the study read. \u201cIn many cases, the differences between young Latinas and Latinos are substantially larger than those observed among older voters.\u201d<\/p>\n Younger, non-college educated Latinas also might work in fields \u201cthat place them in contact with immigrant communities, such as child care, social services, or service work, inspiring their views on Trump and democracy,\u201d the study states.<\/p>\n \u201cIt may also be that younger Latino men get their news and information from sources that differ dramatically from those of younger Latinas, or that their education and labor market experiences place them in positions where they are less likely to form progressive views.\u201d<\/p>\n The gender gap narrows for Latinas and Latinos with four-year college degrees, the study found.<\/p>\n \u201cIn several cases, Latina and Latino college graduates express nearly identical levels of concern\u201d about immigrants, Trump and protecting democracy and voting rights.<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/RPE-L-LATINOS-0911.jpg\")
