A California man died after plunging into a lake to rescue his dog<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Geordan White, 60, of Redding was aboard a boat on Shasta Lake<\/a> Friday morning when his pet jumped into the water, prompting White to go in after it, according to the Shasta County Sheriff\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n

The incident unfolded around 9 a.m. near the Bailey Cove Boat Launch, when 911 dispatchers received a call from someone aboard a nearby vessel.<\/p>\n

White began struggling after entering the lake, and the caller attempted to help by tossing him a flotation device.<\/p>\n

But White could not maintain his hold on the floatation device and soon vanished beneath the surface, authorities said.<\/p>\n

White died after leaping off a boat into a California lake to save his pet dog. Facebook\/@geordan.white<\/p>\n

White was remembered over the weekend by members of the local music community. Facebook\/@geordan.white<\/p>\n

A dive team later located and recovered<\/a> White\u2019s body from the lake.<\/p>\n

An autopsy is expected to determine the exact cause of death.<\/p>\n

The dog, meanwhile, survived the ordeal after the 911 caller managed to pull the animal safely from the water, according to the sheriff\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

The department offered its condolences to White\u2019s loved ones while issuing a reminder about the dangers of being in the water without proper safety equipment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Shasta County Sheriff\u2019s Office extends our condolences to the victim\u2019s loved ones,\u201d the department said in a news release. \u201cThe Sheriff\u2019s Office also encourages the public to always wear personal flotation devices while on the water.\u201d<\/p>\n

White was also remembered over the weekend by members of the local music community, where he had been involved with a band.<\/p>\n

A Facebook group paid tribute to him Saturday, writing: \u201cRest In Peace Geordan White. You were one of the good ones and you will be missed.\u201d<\/p>\n

The sheriff\u2019s office has not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding White\u2019s death.<\/p>\n
