\n milestone. \u201cWe shouldn\u2019t be here. This was a dumb idea, and it
\n was a prototype that I thought would fail in the first two
\n years.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
\n \n Inside the Community Shop Class space.\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n \n Dumb idea or not, Orcutt left a 13-year career at Apple to seek \n \n Chad Orcutt chats with students in the Community Shop Class\u2019 \n In the process, however, Orcutt says, while trying to thrive in \n \n \u201cCelebrating the five-year anniversary of shop class today; this \n \u201cGrowing up, I was a non-reader and impacted by ADHD pretty \n \u201cThat was my entire intent when I got started \u2014 I wanted to get a \n \n Remnants of the original Community Shop Class, where tools were \n Orcutt, who lives in Oak Park, says they faced a major crisis \n \n \u201cI love the community aspect of shop class, and I love the \n \u201cAre you kidding me?\u201d Orcutt says, thanking Rossell for all of \n Maples\u2019 office credits Orcutt and businesses like Shop Class with \n \n Community Shop Class founder Chad Orcutt with assistant manager \n \u201cCommunity Shop Class is a critical gathering space and community \n Five years after signing that lease, while vestiges of the<\/a><\/p>\n
\n an undetermined vision, then signed a lease five years ago for
\n the building that formerly housed a motorcycle club, line dancing
\n group and Mexican restaurant. After figuring out the astronomical
\n cost of a roller rink, he changed plans and, after nine months of
\n renovation, it became the nonprofit Community Shop Class with the
\n goal of helping kids just like himself with
\n attention-deficit\/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).\n<\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n
\n summer camp program at a fifth-anniversary party on August 30.\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
\n the rough environment along Stockton Boulevard, he gave out food
\n to the neighborhood on Thanksgiving, started the Fix-it Caf\u00e9 and
\n loaned out tools while teaching thousands of students the basics
\n of how to build tiny homes and tackle projects from simple DIY
\n tasks to more complex jobs.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n

\n high school, where we had a ton of shop classes. Here, I wanted
\n to see if I could build a type of learning center that works for
\n kids with ADHD.\n<\/p>\n

\n intervened. Orcutt says they increased security and began hiring
\n armed guards for events.\n<\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n
\n primary mission of giving neurodivergent kids a place where they
\n can shine and learn in a way that works for them,\u201d volunteer
\n Leslie Gandy says.\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n Caity Maple\u2019s office (and) the mayor\u2019s office helped us. We got
\n some private security, and finally, we got them off our block. We
\n stood up to them. We had to because we wanted to save this spot,
\n and this building was too important.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
\n helping revitalize key Sacramento neighborhoods like Oak Park.\n<\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n

\n conduit, where people can find help, connection, and purpose,\u201d
\n Councilmember Caity Maple, whose district represents Oak Park,
\n said in a statement. (Maple is currently on maternity leave.)
\n \u201cPlaces like this are exactly why we need to keep investing in
\n Stockton Boulevard and neighborhoods that have gone far too long
\n without the attention and resources they deserve.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
\n original \u201cshop class\u201d idea remain, the original concept
\n admittedly failed, Orcutt says, as he grew tired of chasing the
\n many grants needed to stay afloat. But as he moves into a new
\n direction, the space endures, and he credits numerous
\n benefactors, including the \u201cbig four\u201d \u2014 Wendy Abrams and her
\n Eleven Eleven Foundation, Sierra Service Project, SMUD, and
\n California Volunteers.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
