Comedian and podcast host Bill Maher called out deep-blue California on Monday and said the state\u2019s voters would always support a Democrat, even if their policies were failing, as long as President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0was associated with the Republican Party.<\/p>\n

During\u00a0an interview<\/a>\u00a0on \u201cClub Random\u201d with David Foster, Maher argued that California would never vote for a Republican as long as Trump was involved in the party.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Maher noted\u00a0Spencer Pratt, <\/a>a Republican who finished third in Los Angeles\u2019 mayoral race and therefore did not advance to the general election, had the instinct that California had a \u201cfailed system,\u201d and Maher agreed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt just shows that, in this state, I guess everywhere, we\u2019re so bipartisan now, that we will accept failure, which we plainly have here in\u00a0California, over voting for the party of Trump,\u201d Maher said. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhich, I understand, because he does a lot of things that are I mean, plus, Jesus, I mean, I get a lot of s\u2014 from him for the things I criticize just off the top of my head, vulgar, corrupt, doesn\u2019t concede elections, you know, inept at things that sometimes were a good idea to begin with. Close the border, you know, get rid of nuclear weapons in Iran, but f\u2014ed up the execution.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs long as he\u2019s there, this state will never vote for a Republican, no matter how bad the Democrat gets. And that is a bad place to be,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

Psychotherapist and author Jonathan Alpert told\u00a0Fox News Digital, \u201cThis isn\u2019t just a California or Democratic problem. Republicans can fall into the same trap. Once politics becomes part of your identity, it\u2019s remarkably easy to excuse things from your own side that you\u2019d be furious about if the other side did them. That\u2019s the bigger problem Maher is getting at. If politicians know you\u2019ll vote for them no matter what, why should they be afraid of failing you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Maher also compared\u00a0government-run grocery stores<\/a>\u00a0to \u201cwhat they looked like\u201d in Cuba and the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think we should have government-run grocery stores. I remember what they looked like in Cuba and the Soviet Union. It wasn\u2019t great. You know, kids, we tried this s\u2014,\u201d Maher said.<\/p>\n

Both Foster and Maher said it \u201cdoesn\u2019t\u201d work.<\/p>\n

Maher has been outwardly critical of California\u2019s policies, including education.<\/p>\n

He was critical of California\u00a0Democrats during his \u201cReal Time\u201d show in July over education and green energy, arguing that Mississippi and Texas are outperforming the deep-blue state on issues Democrats often campaign on.<\/p>\n

\u201cDemocrats, these are your issues: education, race, the environment,\u201d Maher said. \u201cAnd I say this with love: you\u2019re losing to the Waffle House, car-on-the-lawn states.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maher said California\u2019s school outcomes were especially difficult to defend when compared with Mississippi, citing fourth-grade results for Black students.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you know that a Black fourth grader in Mississippi is 2.5 times as likely to be proficient in math and reading as one in California?\u201d Maher asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cMississippi is kicking our a\u2013 in education and for way less money. We\u2019re 37th in fourth-grade reading. They\u2019re ninth,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Maher was citing a Feb. 9, 2026 New York Times article\u00a0which stated<\/a>, \u201cFor anyone familiar with civil rights history, national testing results are astonishing. A Black Mississippi child is two and a half times as likely to be proficient in reading by fourth grade as a Black California child.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 2024 National Assessment of Educational Programs snapshots show\u00a0Black fourth-graders in Mississippi\u00a0at 19% proficient and 2% advanced in reading, compared with 7% proficient and 1% advanced in California.<\/p>\n
