{"id":464104,"date":"2026-09-15T04:28:10","date_gmt":"2026-09-15T04:28:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/464104\/"},"modified":"2026-09-15T04:28:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-15T04:28:10","slug":"california-governor-signs-ai-toy-chatbot-bills-into-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/464104\/","title":{"rendered":"California Governor Signs AI Toy &#038; Chatbot Bills into Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On September 10, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed AI companion chatbot bills <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billStatusClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260SB867\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">SB 867<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260SB1119\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">SB 1119<\/a> into law. Here\u2019s what toy companies should know: <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n    SB 867 imposes a four-year moratorium on the manufacture or sale of a toy designed for children under 16 years of age that contains an AI companion chatbot. The moratorium will commence January 1, 2027 and last until January 1, 2031.&#13;<br \/>\n    SB 1119 is a broader measure that establishes requirements for all AI companion chatbots, with primary focus on those used by children under the age of 18.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The Toy Association\u2122 will share compliance guidance with members as it becomes available. <\/p>\n<p>The Association continues to remain actively engaged on AI companion chatbot toy legislation at the state and federal levels and has maintained a consistent position opposed to moratoriums and in support of a study approach to ensure children\u2019s safety. Following discussion with The Toy Association, legislation at the federal level has been modified to adopt a study approach, in lieu of a product ban. This advocacy is complemented by the Association\u2019s work to help the industry navigate emerging AI technologies through its development of Safety Guidelines for AI-Enabled Toys.<\/p>\n<p>The Toy Association will keep members informed of any policy developments regarding AI.
