In an article by Time magazine, 500 colleges in the United States were ranked for the 2026-2027 academic year based on factors such as student outcomes, learning environment and attractiveness to applicants. Among these 500 colleges, Cal State Fullerton ranked 321st place overall.<\/p>\n
In the learning environment category, the university scored a 31.07, in 465th place. Similarly, other CSU schools on the list, outside of the Channel Islands Campus and Cal Poly Pomona\u2019s Maritime Academy, all scored under 50.00. This could be attributed to how the majority of CSU campuses hold high admissions rates, meaning the university lets in more students than it can support in terms of academic quality.\u00a0<\/p>\n
CSUF must stop over-admitting students to prioritize the true quality of the institution as it continuously slips.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The CSU has a very simple application process. There\u2019s no requirement for essays or supplemental materials, often making CSUs one of the first places students apply.<\/p>\n
\u201cStudents are looking at the institution, and one of the first things they\u2019re looking at is what are the admissions,\u201d said Associate Vice President of Strategic Enrollment Management Jessica Barco. \u201cWe have a large volume of students that apply to Cal State Fullerton and more students that apply than we can offer admissions to, that\u2019s clear and true.\u201d<\/p>\n
Barco states that while there have been no changes in admission criteria, in the last five years, the university\u2019s acceptance rate has hiked. When the school\u2019s current 4th years, bound for graduation in the approaching Spring, applied to CSUF in 2022, the school\u2019s acceptance rate was 66.72%. Since then, the admission rates have skyrocketed to around 91% as of 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n
CSUF receives roughly 85,000 incoming student applications yearly, making it a very popular choice for students applying to college. 91% of these students are accepted, however, only around 14% to 16% of those students ultimately choose to attend CSUF.<\/p>\n
Despite these seemingly small numbers, CSUF is the CSU\u2019s largest university, boasting a student population of just under 46,000 as of fall 2025 and the effects of this are seen in current students\u2019 college lives.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Second-year communications major Sophia Najera worries about how the high admissions rates affect the value of the education students are getting.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIf admission rates get higher, it could lessen the value of our diplomas. So we\u2019re paying all this money for this good education,\u201d says Najera. \u201cWe\u2019re getting promises of this good education, but it might not get recognized once we go out into the work field with the admissions rates getting higher.\u201d<\/p>\n
CSUF is an access-minded university, meaning their main focus is that every student should\u00a0have access to an affordable, strong higher education. But access to an education that neglects academic rigor cannot hold its merit as a means to launch graduating Titans forward in their professional lives.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
An affordable college education cannot be synonymous with an unwillingness to challenge students for the sake of \u201caccess.\u201d Unlike federally mandated K-12 education, a post-secondary education is no longer an experience forced upon the learner. Titans alike accepted CSUF\u2019s admission offer because they saw a value in career advancement within the university’s program in particular.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Offering them a second-class learning experience with overcrowded lecture halls and disproportionate student-faculty ratios, a survival-of-the-fittest mindset emerges in which an education funded by strained means must suffice.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In these inequitable circumstances, a pityarises, seeking to spoon-feed them an education costumed as \u201cmindful\u201d and \u201caccessible” counteracts the purpose of higher education by actively denying students the opportunity to step up and show off.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI do believe that people should have access to a good education and the good thing about the Cal States is it\u2019s a lot more affordable than some other institutions,\u201d Najera said. \u201cBut I also believe that I know I worked hard to get into a good college and I feel like everybody should have the results of the work that they put in.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
CSUF cannot boast its students’ talent while actively stunting that talent through a systematic disregard of individual needs. A university that prides itself on uplifting and supporting its student body must reflect this in the resources it packages as honest opportunities for academic rigor.\u00a0<\/p>\n
When the institution prioritizes admissions that emphasize accessibility agendas over honing the curriculum to develop student readiness when resources are already stretched beyond thin, the university ultimately dilutes the potency of its diplomas.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Charleigh Wintrinch is the opinion editor of the Daily Titan.
