Comedian Matt Rife is ready to laugh at himself in Sacramento on Oct. 11. That\u2019s when the 31-year-old stand-up artist will be performing at the Golden 1 Center.<\/p>\n
Rife first came to prominence in 2022 after videos of his comic routines went viral on TikTok. He became known for his crowd work, where he would insult audience members in a back-and-forth ribbing style.<\/p>\n
His 2023 Netflix stand-up comedy special, \u201cNatural Selection,\u201d sparked controversy when he opened the show with a joke about domestic violence. Following a mock-apology he posted online, Rife continued performing and went on to film a second Netflix special, \u201cLucid: A Crowd Work Special,\u201d in 2024.<\/p>\n
Originally from outside of Columbus, Ohio, Rife was introduced to stand-up comedy by his late grandfather. He often performed at Black comedy clubs in his hometown, and cites Black comedians as a big inspiration for his work, including Dave Chapelle.<\/p>\n
Despite the controversy, Rife has a resilient mindset. He\u2019s often quoted saying on social media, \u201cIf you can learn to laugh at the things that should make you miserable\u2014including yourself sometimes\u2014that\u2019s how you win life.\u201d<\/p>\n
