Travelers at Sacramento International Airport<\/a> will soon pay more to park as the airport prepares to open a new parking structure in Terminal B.<\/p>\n

The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors approved the proposed parking rate increases<\/a> at Tuesday’s meeting.<\/p>\n

Travelers say parking can be challenging, particularly when closer parking lots fill up quickly.<\/p>\n

“It’s difficult, long, and adds a lot to our travel time, especially with a toddler,” said Lindsey Nelson, a frequent flier from West Roseville.<\/p>\n

Nelson said she and her family typically park in the East long-term parking lot.<\/p>\n

“It takes us a long time to take the shuttle. The close parking is always booked, and it costs a lot.”<\/p>\n

Still, Nelson is excited about the airport’s plans to open more than 5,000 new parking spaces before Thanksgiving when the new parking structure in Terminal B opens.<\/p>\n

The additional parking will come at a higher price.<\/p>\n

Garages will increase from $21 to $28, while daily walkable lots will rise from $14 to $19. Economy lots will increase from $12 to $14.<\/p>\n

The one-time market adjustments will take effect when the new Garage 2 opens later this year, followed by $1 annual increases in 2028.<\/p>\n

“The bottom line for us is it’s about ensuring our pricing reflects the value we provide and the with the expectations that the travelers want and the financial realities of operating a competitive and well-maintained airport,” said Sheri Thompson-Duarte, the Deputy Director of airport operations and public safety.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Thompson-Duarte said the higher rates will help pay debt service associated with the new parking garage and other recent and upcoming amenities using airport revenues. The additional revenue will also help cover operational needs, including the cost of roadways and future parking-related projects.<\/p>\n

Those amenities will include a parking reservation system and valet parking, which is planned for 2028.<\/p>\n

Melissa Jager, who has a knee replacement, said she could see herself using the valet service.<\/p>\n

“I mean, there’s no price range on your safety of your vehicle and yourself. I think it’s conducive to everything. It’s a win-win situation, quite honestly.”<\/p>\n

Travelers said they don’t mind additional fees if the changes improve their experience.<\/p>\n

“As long as it helps with timing and there’s actual accessibility.”<\/p>\n

The airport also noted that its parking rates have not kept up with inflation and are significantly lower than rates at other airports in California and local downtown parking options.<\/p>\n
