Sacramento school board votes to oppose crematorium near elementary school<\/p>\n

The Twin Rivers Unified School Board voted Tuesday night to oppose the construction of a crematorium within 1,000 feet of Babcock Elementary School in Sacramento, citing concerns about emissions and the health of young students. <\/p>\n

“A very dangerous facility being built right across from one of our elementary schools,” the board said during the meeting. <\/p>\n

The motion passed unanimously, with six votes in favor and none against. Signs in English and Spanish opposing the crematorium have been posted around Babcock Elementary School for months, reflecting the community\u2019s resistance to the project. <\/p>\n

The board\u2019s official opposition letter emphasized the fragility of preschool students and the potential impact of new emission sources near the school, urging careful consideration of the matter. <\/p>\n

The crematorium, located in an industrially zoned area, is being developed by Sang Satar Crematory. Two cremation machines are already nearly fully constructed, visible through the facility\u2019s glass doors. <\/p>\n

The city of Sacramento previously approved the permit for the crematorium, but the project is now awaiting approval from the Sacramento Air Quality Management District. Sang Satar Crematory said over the phone that it has complied with all requirements, adding that it has had no gas or electrical connection since last week and are waiting for the air quality district\u2019s approval to proceed. <\/p>\n

The Sacramento Air Quality Management District sent letters to local residents notifying them of the potential impacts of the crematorium but did not respond in time for comment. <\/p>\n

The Twin Rivers superintendent will now send the board\u2019s opposition letter to the appropriate agencies. The project\u2019s approval status remains pending. <\/p>\n
