\nAs Comstock\u2019s\u00a0reports in this special
\n agriculture-themed issue, it\u2019s getting harder to run a family
\n farm in the Sacramento region. However, a hardscrabble bunch of
\n both young and generations-old farms are still working to keep
\n the region fed.\n<\/p>\n

\n One of the best ways to find and support them is to visit a local
\n farmers market, where farms can sell fruit, vegetables, flowers,
\n meat, eggs and other products directly to consumers instead of
\n working through the often convoluted supply chain that ends in
\n chain supermarkets. And thanks to the region\u2019s warm Mediterranean
\n climate, many of these markets are open and selling seasonal
\n produce year-round.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\n Here\u2019s a roundup of some of notable\u00a0markets in and around
\n Sacramento.\n<\/p>\n

Midtown Farmers Market<\/p>\n

\n Voted the No. 1 farmers market in California, this rain-or-shine
\n event offers so much more than produce. Unfurling over six
\n dedicated blocks with more than 200 vendors, it\u2019s perhaps the
\n only place where you can enjoy an Arab-Mexican fusion sourdough
\n wrap and Vietnamese iced coffee while hunting for vintage
\n clothing. Live music and lively crowds create festival vibes
\n every Saturday.\n<\/p>\n

Central Sacramento Sunday Certified Farmers Market<\/p>\n

\n You might know it as the farmers market under the freeway, and
\n it\u2019s a bit of a hidden gem. The go-to market for Sacramentans
\n looking to stock their fridge with some serious deals on local
\n produce, meat, bread and more, this Sunday market has been going
\n strong since 1980.\n<\/p>\n

Capitol Mall Farmers Market<\/p>\n

\n Ideal for light rail riders, this market is a contender for the
\n longest-running in California, offering affordable groceries

Meadowview Certified Farmers Market<\/p>\n

\n Another light rail stop, Meadowview Market hosts artisan booths
\n selling salsas, sweets, beverages, soaps and more in addition to
\n fresh produce. It also offers perks such as free bike repairs
\n every first Sunday of the month, provided by Sacramento Area
\n Bicycle Advocates, and a Kids Bucks program, in which children 12
\n and under get a $5 voucher for farm products every week.\n<\/p>\n

Carmichael Farmers Market<\/p>\n

\n This year-round market pairs produce from small family farms with
\n foods such as hummus, sauerkraut and fresh-baked scones. Food

\n handmade finds make it easy to turn an errand into a Sunday
\n outing.\n<\/p>\n

Fair Oaks Farmers Market<\/p>\n

\n For those whose weekends get away from them, this year-round

\n eggs, meat and olive oil round out the shopping list.\n<\/p>\n

Orangevale Farmers Market<\/p>\n

Rancho Cordova Certified Farmers\u2019 Market<\/p>\n

\n Another \u201chidden gem,\u201d according to organizers, the only certified
\n farmers market in Rancho Cordova is easily accessible by light
\n rail, offering locally produced groceries every Saturday of the

ONE Natomas Farmers Market<\/p>\n

\n This seasonal Saturday gathering is owned and operated by

\n children.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

Elk Grove Certified Farmers Market<\/p>\n

\n The only certified farmers market in Elk Grove, this year-round
\n market is sometimes known as the Laguna Farmers Market.
\n Produce-focused and affordable, it\u2019s the go-to spot for local
\n fruits, veggies, nuts and even freshly baked bread.\n<\/p>\n
