(KGET) &#8212; The city of Bakersfield is expected to start developing a new ordinance that would hold property owners responsible for any illegal fireworks activity that takes place on their property.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">At the end of the Bakersfield City Council meeting Wednesday, Council member Larry Koman asked city staff to prepare a draft of the &#8220;social host&#8221; ordinance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a data-ylk=\"slk:Watch &#039;After Sunrise&#039; on KGET+; Click to learn how to get KGET+ on your smart TV devices;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kget.com\/plus\/\" class=\"promo-link__link\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0Watch &#8216;After Sunrise&#8217; on KGET+; Click to learn how to get KGET+ on your smart TV devices\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The law, if considered and approved by City Council, would hold the property owner or host of a gathering accountable for illegal fireworks on the property, even if they weren&#8217;t present or had no knowledge of it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">They would then get a civil infraction, according to city officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The draft of the ordinance would first be brought to a future Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods Committee meeting for discussion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The law was first proposed during the <a data-ylk=\"slk:Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods Committee meeting;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kget.com\/news\/local-news\/bakersfield-property-owners-may-be-held-responsible-for-illegal-fireworks-under-potential-ordinance\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods Committee meeting<\/a> in August, when the Bakersfield police and fire departments presented updates on the city&#8217;s efforts to combat illegal fireworks on the Fourth of July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">City officials at the meeting suggested the ordinance, saying it would help close the enforcement gap.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The ordinance is similar to the one already adopted by Kern County.
