UC Berkeley held its annual Engineering and Technology Career Fair, previously known as the EECS Career Fair, Tuesday, drawing hundreds of students seeking jobs in the technology industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Technology companies, mostly representing startup and mid-sized companies, crowded booths into the Pauley Ballroom in the Martin Luther King Jr. Student Union building for the fair.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The longest lines formed around industry giants such as Amazon and buzzy companies such as Cerebras, which creates specialized chips to run AI models,and Archer Aviation, which creates flying cars and drones.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s always jobs, man,\u201d said campus junior Prithvi Dixit. \u201cThe economy\u2019s tough, so (I\u2019m) looking for jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n
Some students at the event said they had already had one or more previous internships, but attended the fair to find more job opportunities.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Students said the number of startups at the fair represented a shift in what UC Berkeley students look for in an employer; smaller companies can offer more direct experience in a job than big technology companies such as Google and Apple, and also allow students to get in on the ground floor.<\/p>\n
\u201cI feel like in general, big companies already have a ton of applicants because people know when their applications release,\u201d said UC Berkeley junior Arin Kadakia. \u201cSome companies are probably trying to get their name out, right? They want people here at Berkeley to know what they do. They want qualified applicants from Berkeley as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
UC Berkeley\u2019s career fair has been a flashpoint for the pressures that computer science majors face in the age of AI, including a shrinking job market. Data from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis indicates that online job postings for software engineering jobs are down about 25% from pre-pandemic levels.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re here at Berkeley Career Fair because Berkeley makes some of the best engineers in the world, and it\u2019s a really deep talent pool to pull from,\u201d said UC Berkeley alum Phillip Chu. Chu is an engineer at Density AI, a small company creating hardware to help run AI models which had a booth at the fair. \u201cI think Berkeley as an institution, as a place to come to school, it rewards scrappiness.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Engineering and Technology career fair is a rebrand of the EECS career fair that campus hosted in previous years.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The EECS career fair previously only invited companies that made donations to campus to become Berkeley Circle partners.Many large technology companies in the Berkeley Circle program, including TikTok, Bloomberg and Databricks, did not attend the fair this year.<\/p>\n
