(KFSN) &#8212; Medical students are learning what it takes to respond to outdoor emergencies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">UCSF Fresno is hosting its Wilderness Medicine Training.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">This is offered to fourth-year medical students as they learn about rescues and life-saving devices like tourniquets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Staff say it&#8217;s important to teach these skills that will help students manage stressful situations they may encounter outside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8221;They&#8217;re not only life-saving in terms of the procedures that they are learning,&#8221; says Michelle Storkan, M.D. &#8220;For example, tourniquets, splinting, so kind of medical emergencies in the wilderness constitute an immediate evacuation. How to call for an evacuation when you&#8217;re far away, what resources might be at your disposal in coordination with EMS emergency medical services.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC eTIW sUzSN \">Next week, students will take their training outside of the classroom as they head to Yosemite National Park.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright \u00a9 2026 KFSN-TV.
