A community vigil is scheduled for Thursday night in Chatsworth where five people died Tuesday in a heartbreaking series of events.<\/p>\n
The Chatsworth Community Vigil is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at St. John Eudes Parish in the San Fernando Valley community.<\/p>\n
“Join us as we come together as a community to honor and remember the lives lost in the tragic events of September 15, and stand in support of their families, loved ones, and all those impacted,” Councilmember John Lee posted in a Facebook invitation. <\/p>\n
The tragedies unfolded in the space of a few hours Tuesday, starting with a horrific crash when a SUV that had been traveling the wrong way at high speed broad-side a Metro bus. Two bus passenger were killed and six were injured. <\/p>\n
The Los Angeles County medical examiner identified the victims as 46-year-old Daniel Castillo and 31-year-old Gage Weida.<\/p>\n
The SUV driver was arrested on suspicion of murder. The LAPD said the SUV driver went through a red light before crash into and partially through the bus at a busy intersection. <\/p>\n
In the minutes that followed, several TV news helicopters were launched to the scene, including NewsChopper4, which provided coverage of the deadly crash for NBCLA and Telemundo 52. The news helicopter owned and operated by Angel City Air lost altitude and crashed in the parking lot of as self-storage business.<\/p>\n
Helicopter reporter Eliana Moreno, long-time pilot George Marciniw and 29-year-old man on the ground died in the crash. He was identified by the coroner’s office a Edy Gutierrez Mejia, who was visiting the city from Cuilapa, Guatemala.<\/p>\n
Moreno, 38, joined Angel City Air, which operates NewsChopper4, in 2010. She delivered aerial reports in both Spanish and English for NBCLA and Telemundo 52.<\/p>\n
Marciniw also grew up in Southern California and graduated from Burbank High School in 1974 before embarking on a decades-long career as a highly regarded pilot. <\/p>\n
Tributes in memory of the journalist and long-time pilot, who often worked together covering wildfires, police pursuits, victory parades and more for NBCLA and Telemundo 52, have been shared in the days following the crash in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley. Flowers, cards and other items were left at the crash site, NewsChopper4’s home base of Whiteman Airport in Pacoima and outside the NBCLA\/Telemundo 52 studios in Universal City. Federal crash safety investigators arrived Wednesday at the crash site to begin their investigation.
