OAKLAND \u2014 A fired Oakland cop has been sentenced to 45 days in a work program that gives offenders a chance to avoid jail, after pleading no contest to a wild hit-and-run from 2024<\/a>, court records show.<\/p>\n

Eduardo Arrizon, 33, pleaded no contest to a single misdemeanor and previously faced up to six months in jail. Instead, he\u2019s required to report to an Alameda County Sheriff work program on Sept. 25 to begin serving his sentence, which can be reduced by half with good behavior, court records show. His no contest plea followed failed attempts by his lawyer to enter Arrizon into a diversion program, which would have allowed him to avoid a conviction.<\/p>\n

Arrizon was charged after erratically driving his 2016 Chevy Silverado down 69th Avenue in Oakland in August 2024. Witnesses said the vehicle sideswiped a parked car, then crashed into a tree, uprooting it and dragging it into another parked vehicle. Still, it continued down the street even after one of the vehicle\u2019s owners got into her car and chased him down the roadway, according to court records.<\/p>\n

When the tree blocked her path, she hopped out and began to charge after him on foot, then watched as the vehicle collided with a stop sign and began to smoke. Arrizon then made a run for it, authorities said. A few minutes later, he allegedly called 911 and reported that he\u2019d been carjacked, giving the dispatcher a description of an armed suspect that matched his own general appearance.<\/p>\n

In court filings, Arrizon\u2019s attorney blamed his \u201csevere depression\u201d for the offense.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Arrizon would like the court to know that at the time of his arrest, he was experiencing severe depression and had recently begun taking a newly prescribed medication, which negatively affected his judgment and mental clarity. While the Defendant shares this information to provide context, he fully understands that it does not excuse his actions,\u201d defense lawyer Nabiel Ahmed wrote. He later added that since his arrest, Arrizon took \u201cmeaningful steps to address his mental health, personal accountability, and overall well-being.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2018, Arrizon was arrested on suspicion of driving 100 miles per hour while drunk and charged with a felony<\/a>. That case\u2019s outcome is unclear; it no longer appears on the county\u2019s docket, which could indicated it was dismissed and sealed, or quashed through diversion.<\/p>\n
