Downtown Santa Ana came alive with music, traditional dress and displays of cultural pride Sunday as the city\u2019s annual Fiestas Patrias Parade traveled along Main Street.<\/p>\n

Families lined the route as colorful floats, marching groups, dancers, musicians, school representatives and community organizations made their way from Washington Avenue toward Civic Center Drive. The two-hour parade opened at 11 am and served as one of the signature events of Santa Ana\u2019s weekend-long Fiestas Patrias celebration.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The parade reflected the cultural identity of a city where approximately three-quarters of residents are Latino. Participants carried the flags of Mexico and other Latin American nations, while performers showcased music, clothing and traditions passed down through generations.<\/p>\n

Fiestas Patrias is timed to coincide with Mexican Independence Day, observed September 16, but the event also recognizes the September independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Chile.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For many spectators, the parade was more than a celebration. It was an opportunity for parents and grandparents to share their heritage with younger family members while affirming the role Latino communities have played in shaping Santa Ana and Orange County. Activists say that role is currently being attacked by federal agents who claim to be enforcing immigration law, while judges have found documented cases of racial profiling and excessive force.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\u201cIt was an incredible act of defiance to see the community come together, albeit in smaller numbers than in the past, and feel the strength and joy of this special event recognizing the immigrant experience,\u201d\u00a0said Orange County Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento. \u201cAfter suffering from racially motivated federal policies over the last two years and experiencing the abuse caused to so many of our neighbors, it was more important than ever for us to gather and recognize our cultural heritage.\u201c<\/p>\n

Sunday\u2019s parade followed Saturday evening\u2019s El Grito de Independencia, a ceremonial reenactment of the call traditionally associated with the beginning of Mexico\u2019s struggle for independence from Spain in 1810.<\/p>\n

Fiestas Patrias remains one of Santa Ana\u2019s largest annual public celebrations, bringing residents and visitors together around a shared appreciation for the history, traditions and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities.<\/p>\n

As music echoed through downtown and families waved flags along Main Street, Sunday\u2019s parade delivered a visible message of community pride: Santa Ana\u2019s cultural heritage is not merely part of its past, but a living tradition carried forward by each new generation.<\/p>\n
