A man crossing the street in a wheelchair at Pacific Coast Highway and East 7th Street was struck and killed in Long Beach in the early hours of Friday, Sept. 18, Long Beach police said.<\/p>\n
The driver, a 23-year-old Irvine man, fled the scene but was found and arrested near Pacific Coast Highway and Second Street, police said. The man was booked into Long Beach City jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter. He was released on bond later on Friday morning, according to jail records.<\/p>\n
The man was driving a white BMW when he struck the pedestrian, who was crossing Pacific Coast Highway in his wheelchair in a marked crosswalk just after 12:30 a.m., according to the Long Beach Police Department. The pedestrian died at the scene. The driver stopped, then drove away from the scene without rendering aid, police said. Footage of the BMW at the scene of the driver\u2019s arrest showed a damaged front end of the car.<\/p>\n
The pedestrian, a man in his 60s, has not been publicly identified, pending notification of his family, according to the Los Angeles County medical examiner\u2019s office.<\/p>\n
