OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – The parents of a 3-year-old boy who died after being shot inside an Oakland County home are now facing charges.<\/p>\n
The child’s mother, 31-year-old Kasharae Kristine Herron, and the child’s father, 39-year-old Michael Duriel Lacy, have both been arraigned on a charge of Firearms \u2013 Safe Storage Violations \u2013 Premises Under Individual\u2019s Control \u2013 Minor Present and Inflicted Death Upon Self or Another.<\/p>\n
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under active investigation, according to officials.<\/p>\n
Oakland County Sheriff\u2019s Office released these details on the case:<\/p>\n
Deputies responded to a residence on Maynard Court at approximately 5:05 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, after receiving a report that a 3-year-old boy had suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Deputies immediately transported the child to McLaren Oakland Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.Four other children, ages 8 months, 4, 7 and 8, were inside the residence at the time of the shooting. The children\u2019s mother, Kasharae Kristine Herron, 31, and their grandmother were also present.The child\u2019s father, Michael Duriel Lacy, 39, was also at the residence when the shooting occurred but fled the scene before deputies arrived. Later that evening, Lacy returned to the area where detectives located him and took him into custody without incident. Oakland County Sheriff\u2019s Office Crime Lab personnel processed the residence and recovered a Taurus 9 mm handgun registered to Lacy. Two spent shell casings and a bullet fragment were also recovered from the basement, where investigators determined the shooting occurred.During the investigation, both Lacy and Herron told detectives they knew the firearm was unsecured in the basement.Detectives completed Care House forensic interviews with the children who were inside the residence. Child Protective Services obtained a judicial removal order for all of the children, which has been executed.<\/p>\n
If convicted, the pair could spend up to 15 years in prison and\/or a fine of up to $10,000.<\/p>\n
Bond for each was set at at $25,000. If either posts bond, they will be required to wear a GPS tether. <\/p>\n
\u201cOn every level, this tragedy was 100 percent preventable. Both suspects knew there was a loaded, unsecured firearm in a home with five children under the age of eight, and now a three-year-old child is dead\u201d Sheriff Mike Bouchard said. \u201cWith great rights come equally great responsibilities\u2014and among the most sacred is protecting our children. Nothing that happens in a courtroom can undo this horrific loss or ease this family\u2019s pain, but there must be accountability for the reckless behavior that led to it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThis tragedy was entirely preventable, and it is enraging to see another child lose his life so senselessly,\u201d said Prosecutor Karen McDonald. \u201cSecuring a firearm is simple and effective. It is the legal responsibility of every adult who chooses to possess a firearm.\u201d<\/p>\n
