LAKE ORION, Mich. \u2013 A 17-year-old student was taken into custody after an Oakland County Sheriff\u2019s Office school resource officer recovered a loaded BB gun from the student\u2019s backpack at Lake Orion High School, police said.<\/p>\n
The incident occurred on Friday (Sept. 18) as police were notified at about 8:24 p.m. of a possible handgun on campus, according to the Sheriff\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n
Police said the school\u2019s resource officer was notified immediately and identified the classroom where the student was located. <\/p>\n
Officials said the officer removed the student from the classroom without incident and secured the backpack.<\/p>\n
Police said the recovered weapon was a loaded .177-caliber revolver-style BB gun. <\/p>\n
Sheriff Michael Bouchard said the black metal BB gun closely resembled an actual handgun.<\/p>\n
Bouchard said the incident underscores the importance of reporting potential threats at schools immediately.<\/p>\n
The student, a 17-year-old girl from Pontiac, was taken into custody and transported to the Oakland County Sheriff\u2019s Office Orion Township Substation. <\/p>\n
Police said the girl was later transported to Oakland County Children\u2019s Village after a juvenile court referee authorized her to stay there.<\/p>\n
Officials secured the BB gun as evidence. <\/p>\n
The case is being submitted to the Oakland County Prosecutor\u2019s Office for review of potential charges, including possession of a pneumatic gun in a weapon-free school zone and carrying a pneumatic gun with intent to use it unlawfully against another person.<\/p>\n
The incident remains under investigation.<\/p>\n
