County Public Health\u00a0Services (PHS)\u00a0has confirmed a mumps outbreak at San Diego State University\u00a0(SDSU)\u00a0and is coordinating with\u00a0school\u00a0leadership on notifications to\u00a0the campus\u00a0community.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
A\u00a0similar\u00a0mumps outbreak on\u00a0the\u00a0SDSU campus<\/a>\u00a0occurred\u00a0in 2020\u00a0and was contained\u00a0through\u00a0collaboration\u00a0between the County and\u00a0SDSU.\u00a0<\/p>\n As of\u00a0Sept.\u00a018,\u00a0five confirmed and probable cases\u00a0have been\u00a0identified, all among\u00a0student athletes\u00a0on a single team.\u00a0The first known symptom onset began on Sept.\u00a06, with the case confirmed this week.\u00a0PHS\u00a0is\u00a0collaborating with\u00a0the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and SDSU officials\u00a0for management of the outbreak,\u00a0including testing of\u00a0known close contacts of people who are ill.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Mumps is a contagious viral illness that spreads easily in close-contact settings, typically within three feet. It can spread through kissing, sharing food or drinks, or exposure coughs or sneezes. People are contagious for two days before symptoms appear and while they are ill. As with other diseases, people who are immune compromised or otherwise vulnerable face higher risk.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Mumps\u00a0symptoms\u00a0include\u00a0body aches,\u00a0loss of appetite,\u00a0fatigue, headache, and fever\u00a0followed\u00a0by\u00a0inflammation\u00a0or\u00a0swelling of the salivary glands\u00a0in the cheeks, testicles (orchitis<\/a>), the ovaries (oophoritis<\/a>) and can progress to\u00a0infection\u00a0in and around the\u00a0brain (meningitis\/encephalitis<\/a>).\u00a0Inflammation of the reproductive organs can lead to sterility in both males and females. Vaccination\u00a0with the measles, mumps, and rubella\u00a0(MMR)\u00a0vaccine\u00a0lowers the risk of complications.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Vaccination is the most effective strategy to prevent and control mumps outbreaks, however it is known that immunity may wane over time. After the U.S. mumps vaccination program started in 1967, there has been a more than 99% decrease in mumps cases in the United States.\u00a0<\/p>\n More information about the mumps is available at the\u00a0CDPH website<\/a>.
