<\/a><\/p>\nSacramento’s multi-platinum band Cake, known for hits like “The Distance,” “Never There,” and “Short Skirt, Long Jacket,” is celebrating its 35th anniversary with a nearly sold-out European tour starting next week. <\/p>\n
Founding band member Vince DiFiore talked to California Tonight Host Edie Lambert about what he expects from concertgoers in cities including Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam, and London.<\/p>\n
“Some people that listened to us in the ’90s and then a new generation of alternative music listeners. There will be singalongs,” laughed DiFiore, describing the fun of encouraging participation from ardent fans who know all the lyrics to their songs.<\/p>\n
After decades with Cake, DiFiore is also branching out on his own. His solo album, “Executive Functions,” features him playing not only trumpet, but also keyboards and percussion. He also sings the lead vocals. He says the name of the album reflects a focus on a set of higher-level mental processes.<\/p>\n
“The ability to plan and self-evaluate and have initiative — a lot of the songs end up being about that, a soundtrack of my life,” said DiFiore.<\/p>\n
One of the tracks, “The Group,” includes a music video with scenes shot at the Sacramento Railroad Museum and other local locations. DiFiore’s son, Carlo, served as the director of photography for the video. <\/p>\n
He said he was encouraged to record the album by friends, and in particular the owner of a Sacramento music studio. <\/p>\n
“I got in there and did one song and I liked how it sounded, so I kept on going,” said DiFiore.<\/p>\n
He also reflected on the experience of working independently after years of collaboration with the band. He said it was a great opportunity to be creative and record more of his original songs.<\/p>\n
After their European tour, Cake has additional dates planned in Florida and Australia. For hometown fans, DiFiore said the band is performing in a benefit show for Ukraine on January 12 and 13, 2027, at the Fox Theater in Oakland. They’re raising money to buy food and medical assistance for the people of Ukraine.<\/p>\n
