The public notice was posted in March, and public records indicate the Planning Department recommended approval in May.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">At the time of its closure, Jack\u2019s was the third-oldest restaurant in the city, a smoky, boozy place where mixed social classes came to see and be seen while tucking into Continental cuisine like double-cut pork chops, escargots, and creamed spinach. The four-story building \u2014 with plentiful staircases \u2014 is a challenging space for a restaurateur to tackle but is \u201cprobably the most beautiful restaurant in San Francisco,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">This won\u2019t be the first time someone has attempted a revival. In 2002, a chef named Philippe Jeanty reopened the restaurant as a brasserie called <a href=\"https:\/\/noehill.com\/sf\/landmarks\/sf146.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Jeanty at Jack\u2019s (opens in new tab)<\/a>. It closed within a few years, and the site was later home to a coworking space that has since closed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Birmingham Development LLC, which purchased the building in 2018, was contacted for comment but did not respond in time for publication.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">In terms of longevity, two San Francisco restaurants have a leg up on Jack\u2019s. <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2022\/06\/08\/one-of-sfs-oldest-restaurants-the-old-clam-house-quietly-reopens-after-2-year-covid-closure\/\" data-post-id=\"9213142e-8bed-44b4-8425-982ed3ec5606\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Old Clam House<\/a>, on Bayshore Boulevard, was founded in 1861 and reopened in 2024 after a Covid-era closure, while <a href=\"https:\/\/tadichgrillsf.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Tadich Grill (opens in new tab)<\/a> opened in 1849; however, it has changed locations several times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-block article-body undefined text-left\">Additional reporting by Lauren Saria.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A long-vanished relic of classic San Francisco dining is set to return to its original downtown address.
