A 17-year-old female student was taken into custody Friday at Lake Orion High School after an Oakland County Sheriff\u2019s deputy recovered a loaded, realistic-looking BB gun from the student\u2019s backpack.<\/p>\n
School officials notified law enforcement at approximately 8:24 a.m. of a possible handgun on campus.<\/p>\n
The deputy was notified and quickly identified the student\u2019s classroom and removed her without incident and confiscated the backpack.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe recovered item was a loaded .177-caliber revolver-style BB gun. The black, metal BB gun closely resembled an actual handgun,\u201d Sheriff Michael Bouchard said in a press release. \u201cAfter receiving information about a possible firearm on campus, deputies working with school staff were able to locate the classroom, the student\u2019s backpack, and the weapon in less than 10 minutes. This incident reaffirms our strong belief that any information about a potential threat at school must receive immediate attention from both school and law enforcement officials so we can step in quickly. Thankfully, this scary situation was resolved safely and without further incident.\u201d<\/p>\n
The student was taken into custody and transported to the Oakland County Sheriff\u2019s Orion Township substation and later transported to Oakland County Children\u2019s Village after the move was authorized by a juvenile court referee.<\/p>\n
The BB gun was secured as evidence and the case is being submitted to Oakland County prosecutors for review of potential charges, including possession of a pneumatic gun in a weapon-free school zone and carrying a pneumatic gun with intent to use it unlawfully against another person.<\/p>\n
