A Sacramento truck driver stabbed 17 times<\/a> in Wyoming needs \u201curgent help\u201d paying his hospital bills.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s according to the organizer of a new GoFundMe fundraising campaign<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Gurvinder Singh, 28, is recovering from injuries he received in a brutal attack at a rest area off Interstate 80.<\/p>\n

The Sweetwater County Sheriff\u2019s Office<\/a> in Wyoming has arrested a suspect in connection to the Sunday, Sept. 13, incident.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis attack has left Gurvinder, his family and those who care about him devastated,\u201d organizer Lovepreet Singh wrote on GoFundMe. \u201cRight now, the focus is on helping him survive, stabilize, and receive the urgent treatment needed for his injuries.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the Sweetwater County Sheriff\u2019s Office<\/a>, the stabbing took place<\/a> early Sunday morning near the Bitter Creek rest area on I-80.<\/p>\n

Gurvinder Singh, who has been driving trucks commercially on I-80 for the past three years, said he walked into the rest area\u2019s bathroom after parking his truck.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I entered the restroom, I just looked in the mirror,\u201d Singh previously told The Sacramento Bee.<\/p>\n

Then a strange man \u201crushed in, punched me in the neck, pushed me against the wall and kept punching me in the face,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Singh said he pushed his attacker away, only to have the man lunge at him with a knife.<\/p>\n

\u201cI received cuts on my arms, neck and chest, including a deep cut on the left side of my chest under my arm,\u201d Singh said. \u201cI was able to see the naked bone on my right arm.\u201d<\/p>\n

His attacker \u201cfled the scene in a tractor-trailer combination towards Rawlins following the attack,\u201d the Sheriff\u2019s Office said<\/p>\n

Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers located the suspect \u2014 later identified as San Gabriel Andrew Kris Bzdak, 44, of San Gabriel \u2014 in Rawlins and arrested him, the Sheriff\u2019s Office said.<\/p>\n

As of Friday, Sept. 8, Bzdak was being held at the Sweetwater County Detention Center<\/a> on suspicion of attempted murder, according to the jail records and Sheriff\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

The attack on Singh sent shockwaves across the United States, with members of the Sikh community reacting with sorrow and anger.<\/p>\n

Singh suffered a number of severe injuries, including a punctured lung, according to the GoFundMe fundraiser.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are pleased to report that Mr. Singh was released from the hospital last night,\u201d Jasjit Singh Dhanoa, attorney and director of legal services of Jakara Movement<\/a>, told The Bee via phone on Friday.<\/p>\n

Gurvinder Singh is now \u201con a long road to recovery, surrounded by family and friends,\u201d Dhanoa said.<\/p>\n

According to the GoFundMe page, Gurvinder Singh does not have medical insurance.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe costs of emergency care, surgery, hospital treatment, medication, rehabilitation and follow-up care may be overwhelming,\u201d Lovepreet Singh said.<\/p>\n

As of Friday afternoon, the GoFundMe campaign \u201cHelp Gurvinder Survive After a Brutal Stabbing in Wyoming<\/a>\u201d had raised more than $12,000 toward a $100,000 goal.<\/p>\n

Contributors included the Asian American Foundation, which gave a $10,000 donation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are incredibly grateful to everyone who has donated, shared the fundraiser, and kept Gurvinder in their thoughts,\u201d Lovepreet Singh wrote in an update on the GoFundMe site.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour support means more to our family than we can express during this incredibly difficult time,\u201d Singh wrote. \u201cEvery donation and share makes a meaningful difference.\u201d<\/p>\n
