A Sacramento County community is fighting tooth and nail to keep a proposed slaughterhouse \u2014 and its planned \u201ckill floor\u201d \u2014 from bringing livestock slaughter to their rural neighborhood<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 20-acre project<\/a>, dubbed \u201cGreenfarm,\u201d was approved in July and narrowly survived an appeal from residents in the Rio Linda-Elverta community.<\/p>\n

Neighbors say they\u2019re worried about everything from the impact on their children to potential contamination and the smell of slaughtered animals<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Residents are concerned the 20-acre project, named \u201cGreenfarm,\u201d will stain the neighborhood. Sacramento County<\/p>\n

\u201cMy kids play in a seasonal pond that we have in our backyard and it flows directly from their property. Are they still safe to play there?\u201d Sacramento County<\/p>\n

\u201cWe live about 600 feet from the back of their property and we see it all,\u201d a community member said during the public comment portion of an Aug. 24\u00a0Sacramento County Planning Commission meeting.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just glad I don\u2019t live next door, I\u2019ll say that, but I know there are some folks here that do,\u201d\u00a0another person said.<\/p>\n

The project plans to house livestock and accept customers for up to 30 custom slaughter services per week.<\/p>\n

Bahadur Amiri, who is behind the project, says Sacramento needs more halal slaughtering services.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not easy when you\u2019re just by yourself and the whole community comes against you,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

A member of the Sacramento Planning Commission, Joseph Devlin, backed the proposal because he believes the community will benefit from the slaughtering services. Sacramento County<\/p>\n

Another concern is the smell that might come from the animal butchering site. Sacramento County<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are and have claimed to be the Farm to Fork capital of the world. However, one of the, probably, biggest gaps within that Farm to Fork is the actual acquiring and harvesting of meat that is locally sourced,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

But neighbors remain concerned about what the operation could bring to their backyards \u2014 including the smell.<\/p>\n

There are no additional public hearings and the project is set to move forward, according to Fox 40. Sacramento County<\/p>\n

Amiri said he respects his neighbors and their concerns but insists the operation will not produce a smell because it will be sealed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going to be sealed tank,\u201d he said. \u201cThis operation is not going to happen in the middle of the yard, [it] is going to be inside the building and that building will be inspected by the building department.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are no additional public hearings and the project is set to move forward, according to Fox 40.<\/a><\/p>\n

Community members told the outlet they remain hopeful since the project has not yet been finalized.<\/p>\n
