The San Francisco Bay Area is a dream for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. From dramatic coastal trails along Highway 1 to Muir Woods’ old-growth redwoods, this California region offers endless choices for outdoor adventures. As someone born and raised in the Bay Area with a deep appreciation for the natural world, I’m constantly on the lookout for hidden gems to explore on my next day off. One destination that has quickly risen to the top of my wish list is Joseph D. Grant County Park<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Located at the foot of Mt. Hamilton, about 30 minutes outside Downtown San Jose, this 10,882-acre park features rolling hills covered in oaks, vast expanses of open space, and the\u00a0serene Grant Lake. The land provides refuge for over 70 native animals, including wild turkeys, bobcats, tule elk, mountain lions, and over 32 bird species. The centerpiece is the 51-mile trail network, which includes hiking, mountain biking, and multi-use trails that crisscross the landscape. Other activities include spending the night at family campsites, picnicking, fishing, and wildlife photography.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The park earns 4.6 stars on Google Maps<\/a>, with visitors describing<\/a> it as “an absolute paradise for nature lovers” and another stating<\/a> it’s “a wonderful escape from the city.” To reach the park entrance, you’ll need to drive up\u00a0Mt. Hamilton Road, a former stagecoach route with lots of curves that aren’t for the faint of heart. Take your time and be extra mindful of wildlife around dusk and dawn. The park is open from 8 a.m.\u00a0to sunset and requires a small entrance fee.<\/p>\n

Joseph D. Grant County Park’s impressive roster of hiking trails has everything from uphill thigh-burners to casual paths. The best loops include a combination of several different trails, so it’s a good idea to download the trail map (pdf)<\/a>. For an easy stroll, take the Yerba Buena Trail via McCreery and Grant Lakes<\/a>.\u00a0This 2.7-mile loop\u00a0follows a small creek and provides some shade, but can become impassable during the wet months.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, if you’re seeking spectacular views across the South Bay, embark on the 9-mile (round-trip) trek up to Antler Point. There are two ways to reach the summit, but starting from the Twin Gates Trailhead (find the coordinates here<\/a>) and then following the Canada de Pala Trail\u00a0offers panoramic views on the way up. This route usually takes over\u00a0five hours and has approximately 1,300 feet of elevation gain. It’s almost entirely exposed, so you’ll need to pack tons of water and follow park ranger tips for hiking safety<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The park is also a great place to see California’s iconic wildflowers in spring<\/a> without the crowds. “The rolling hills turn lush green, wildflowers blanket the landscape, and the bird and animal activity is simply wonderful,” shared a wildlife photographer on Google Reviews<\/a>. In particular, the Canada de Pala Trail showcases dramatic blankets of lupine and California poppies between late April and early May. While hikers say the park is an all-seasons hiking destination, they warn the summer months can get unbearably hot.<\/p>\n

While hiking is undeniably the biggest draw, Joseph D. Grant County Park’s true hidden gem is its family campground. Shaded by gnarled oaks, the campground features around 40 sites for tents tucked into the hills. There are also eight equestrian-only sites. Campers have access to hot showers, and each site comes with a picnic table, a fire ring with a grill, and access to water. However, during fire season, consider bringing a\u00a0campfire alternative for a safe fire experience<\/a> and always check for “no fire” postings.\u00a0<\/p>\n

From the campground, visitors can walk or drive to the historic Grant Ranch House, the former home and country retreat of businessman Joseph D. Grant. Dating back to 1882, the house is beautifully preserved, boasting rose gardens, fountains, and period-appropriate furniture. The house is only open to the public during the summer on the first Saturday of the month\u00a0\u2014\u00a0check the Santa Clara County Parks calendar<\/a> before visiting.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The park also offers fishing in Grant Lake and several small ponds spread throughout the acreage. Anglers provide differing accounts, with some reporting<\/a> bass catches in the shady sections of Grant Lake, while others say<\/a> it’s a good place to teach kids the patience (and disappointment) of fishing. NoSkunkAdventures<\/a> pinpoints a hidden fishing spot 0.5 miles along the west side of Mt. Hamilton Road, advising, “Look for the opening in [the] fence line and it will be a 5-minute hike down into the water.”<\/p>\n
