California Gov. Gavin Newsom <\/a>on Saturday signed a raft of legislation aimed at protecting the state\u2019s voting systems against federal intervention in November\u2019s midterm elections.<\/p>\n

\u201cDonald Trump won\u2019t stop until he can exert dictatorial control over your free vote and disenfranchise millions of people this November,\u201d Newsom said in a statement. \u201cCalifornia will stop him at every opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Among the bills signed by the Democratic governor \u2014 who is widely regarded as a potential 2028 presidential contender<\/a> \u2014 is one that bars other states\u2019 militaries <\/a>from entering California without the governor\u2019s permission, and another criminalizing the seizure of ballots or election records<\/a> before results are certified.<\/p>\n

He also signed a bill that expands protections on mail-in voting<\/a>, which President Donald Trump has sought to restrict across the country this year despite having voted by mail himself, including in last month\u2019s Florida primary elections<\/a>. Newsom also approved legislation that prohibits law enforcement officers from arresting people within 200 feet<\/a> of a polling place on Election Day, unless the person is actively committing a crime.<\/p>\n
