Elk Grove community honors prisoners of war and those missing in action<\/p>\n

This weekend, the Elk Grove community gathered for an annual ceremony to honor prisoners of war and those missing in action, highlighting the importance of remembrance and tradition. <\/p>\n

The event included a full ceremony with a color guard displaying the prisoner of war flag alongside the United States flag. Over a dozen families attended the somber occasion. <\/p>\n

“We are committed to honoring and remembering our POW and MIAs that still may be out there. It’s important, we don’t want to forget,” said Henry Sanchez, a veteran from Elk Grove. <\/p>\n

A single chair and table were displayed as families awaited the return of their loved ones. “The single rose and the vase, signifies the blood they may have shed to ensure the freedom of the United States of America,” officials explained. <\/p>\n

Assemblywoman Stephanie Nguyen, who represents the 10th Assembly District in Elk Grove, shared her personal connection to the day. <\/p>\n

“As the daughter of refugees I know the sacrifice was for our veterans to do what they have to do. It’s not lost at me that’s why I get to do what I get to do. That’s why I have freedom,” Nguyen said. <\/p>\n

Families, including a group of scouts, took part in the morning ceremony to experience the sights and sounds of the remembrance day. <\/p>\n

Sanchez encouraged the community to keep the families of those still waiting for their loved ones in their thoughts. <\/p>\n

“It’s a team effort to serve our country. In this case, we’re continuing to serve our country although I may be in civilian attire now,” he said. <\/p>\n

According to officials, there are more than 7,000 military families in Elk Grove.<\/p>\n
