One third of MTS bus routes could be on the chopping block and another third of bus and trolley service could be reduced to help close a major budget gap.<\/p>\n
\u201cPublic transport is vital to the community because it helps people commute to their jobs, get access to their healthcare, also it primarily affects the people that are not as maybe able bodied to be able to drive,\u201d Leslie Gonzalez said.<\/p>\n
Gonzalez is among many San Diegans who rely on public transportation to get around town.<\/p>\n
Steve Jeffrey uses both the MTS bus and trolley services because he and his wife only have one car.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s very affordable as of now,\u201d Steve Jeffrey said.<\/p>\n
As MTS looks forward to the 2030 fiscal year, it\u2019s forecasting annual budget deficits of up to $150 million. <\/p>\n
Thursday MTS shared scenarios that could affect many San Diego riders like Leslie and Steve. They include the possibility of eliminating one third of MTS bus routes with service to Sea World, Cabrillo Monument, Mission Hills, and Tierra Santa.<\/p>\n
Steve Jeffrey said his bus line would be on the chopping block cutting his access to get to the trolley.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m disappointed because I\u2019m so used to it,\u201d Jeffrey said.<\/p>\n
The scenario or proposal would also reduce service on another third of bus routes and all four trolley lines.<\/p>\n
Gonzalez said while many have the option of calling a rideshare service or a friend, some don\u2019t.<\/p>\n
She also worries about the MTS employees who could lose their job.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s a mistake and not only it\u2019s a mistake, I think it\u2019s an injustice. You\u2019re basically disenfranchising a large segment of the population that relies on this service,\u201d Leslie Gonzalez said.<\/p>\n
Fare increases are set to begin next month, but MTS officials said that wouldn\u2019t be enough to close the gap.<\/p>\n
One possible saving grace to avoid the cuts \u2013 if MTS gets funding from the state or if San Diego\u2019s voters approve a sales tax hike for transit in 2028.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think there\u2019s a responsibility from our government locally, state, and federal to provide these people the opportunity to commute to their necessary appointments or jobs etc\u2026through the usage of public transport,\u201d Gonzalez said.<\/p>\n
In a statement to NBC 7 MTS said in part, \u201cMTS is implementing a financial sustainability strategy to push out the fiscal cliff to 2030 and have more time to try and secure more funding to balance the budget. \u201cAdding that, \u201cThe agency is also advocating for additional funding at the state level.<\/p>\n
