An unvaccinated passenger with measles traveled earlier this month on Amtrak trains and buses from Chicago to multiple stops across California, state health officials said Friday evening.<\/p>\n
The California Department of Public Health in a statement said it is coordinating with state and federal health authorities after being advised that the traveler, who has since been hospitalized, passed through at least six California counties during the voyage.<\/p>\n
The five-day trip began Sept. 10 with a train from Chicago to Los Angeles, with the passenger then proceeding to five other California stations before arriving in Denver on Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n

The trip involved a stop at Amtrak\u2019s Sacramento Valley Station in downtown Sacramento, where health officials said the passenger arrived by bus from Oroville at approximately 6:05 p.m. Sunday. The passenger then departed from Sacramento for Emeryville around 6:53 p.m.<\/p>\n
State health officials shared the traveler\u2019s full route through California. The passenger:<\/p>\n
arrived around 8:12 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at Los Angeles Union Station via Train 3 from Chicago;arrived around 1:45 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at Bakersfield Station via Train 5717 from Los Angeles;arrived around 6:29 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at Stockton\u2019s San Joaquin Street Station via Train 717 from Bakersfield;arrived around 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Oroville bus\/throughway stop via Bus Route 3717 from Stockton;arrived around 6:05 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, at Sacramento Valley Station via Bus Route 3718 from Oroville;arrived around 8:36 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, at Emeryville Station via Train 749 from Sacramento; andconcluded the trip around 6:59 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, in Denver via Train 6 from Emeryville.<\/p>\n
The travel schedule indicates the passenger may have lodged Saturday night in the Oroville area and Sunday night in the Emeryville area.<\/p>\n
CDPH said it is working with partnering federal agencies and county health offices to notify passengers who might have been exposed to the highly contagious viral disease.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis case, along with previous measles outbreaks in California this year, serve as reminders of the importance of vaccination against measles. Measles is one of the most contagious infections that can lead to severe life-long consequences including permanent brain damage and can also be fatal, especially for children,\u201d said Dr. Rita Nguyen, an assistant state public health officer, in a prepared statement. \u201cThe measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is safe and provides long-lasting protection against measles. Vaccination protects both our own families and those who are too young to be fully vaccinated.\u201d<\/p>\n
