A driver accused of fleeing a South Bay crash left behind a clue that was hard to miss: an imprint of the vehicle’s license plate on the bumper it had just hit.<\/p>\n
The Sept. 12 collision injured another driver and two young children, according to CHP San Jose<\/a>. Officers responded at about 11:10 p.m., but the other driver had already left the scene.<\/p>\n The crash itself supplied the lead officers needed. CHP said the impact stamped the fleeing vehicle’s plate characters onto the victim’s bumper.<\/p>\n That sent officers to the address connected to the plate and, according to CHP, directly to the driver they were looking for.<\/p>\n Stamped Behind<\/p>\n Embedded media follows; please allow a moment to load.<\/p>\n Officers located the driver at the registered owner’s address and began a DUI investigation. CHP said the driver was then arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and DUI causing injury.<\/p>\n Those accusations correspond to California Vehicle Code sections 20001<\/a> and 23153<\/a>. Section 20001 requires a driver involved in a crash causing injury or death to stop at the scene. Section 23153 covers driving under the influence, or above the applicable alcohol threshold, while committing an unlawful act or neglecting a driving duty that causes bodily injury.<\/p>\n CHP did not identify the arrested driver in its public post or specify which subsection of Section 23153 was cited.<\/p>\n One More Number<\/p>\n KRON4 reported<\/a> that one of CHP’s photos showed a breath-testing device displaying 0.179. That photographed display is not the same thing as a court-established blood-alcohol result, but the number provides context for the DUI arrest described by CHP.<\/p>\n The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration<\/a> says driving performance is substantially impaired at a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.15, affecting vehicle control, attention, and visual and auditory processing. NHTSA says drivers at 0.15 are at least 12 times more likely to crash than drivers with no alcohol in their systems.<\/p>\n California’s Section 23153 also includes a 0.08 blood-alcohol threshold for noncommercial drivers when the driving conduct causes bodily injury. CHP’s post, however, did not say that the photographed 0.179 display was the chemical test result used to support any particular subsection of the arrest.<\/p>\n After The Impact<\/p>\n The driver was taken into custody on suspicion of the two reported offenses.
