LBCC\u2019s Heat<br \/>\n  Illness Prevention Program covers outdoor work and indoor work<br \/>\n  areas where employees may be exposed to elevated temperatures,<br \/>\n  humidity, radiant heat, physical exertion, or protective clothing<br \/>\n  that restricts heat removal.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Heat illness is<br \/>\n  preventable;\u00a0Employees working in hot conditions must have<br \/>\n  access to:\n<\/p>\n<p>  Fresh, suitably cool drinking water at no cost<\/p>\n<p>  Shade or an appropriate indoor cool-down area<\/p>\n<p>  Preventative cool-down rests when needed<\/p>\n<p>  Heat illness prevention training<\/p>\n<p>  Acclimatization and additional monitoring when newly assigned<br \/>\n  to hot work<\/p>\n<p>  Reliable communication and emergency assistance<\/p>\n<p>\n  Employees may use these<br \/>\n  protections and report heat-related hazards without<br \/>\n  retaliation.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  What employees should<br \/>\n  do:\n<\/p>\n<p>  Drink small amounts of water frequently; do not wait until<br \/>\n  you are thirsty.<\/p>\n<p>  Take a preventative cool-down rest whenever you feel the<br \/>\n  need.<\/p>\n<p>  Immediately report any signs or symptoms of heat illness in<br \/>\n  yourself or a coworker to your supervisor.<\/p>\n<p>  Follow required work-rest schedules, monitoring procedures,<br \/>\n  and supervisor instructions.<\/p>\n<p>  Watch coworkers for changes in coordination, speech,<br \/>\n  behavior, alertness, or work performance.<\/p>\n<p>  Do not work alone when a buddy system or other monitoring<br \/>\n  method is required.<\/p>\n<p>\n  Heat illness can progress<br \/>\n  quickly.\u00a0Heat exhaustion may include:\n<\/p>\n<p>  Headache, nausea, or dizziness<\/p>\n<p>  Weakness, irritability, or unusual fatigue<\/p>\n<p>  Heavy sweating and thirst<\/p>\n<p>  Elevated body temperature<\/p>\n<p>  Reduced urine output<\/p>\n<p>\n  Stop work, move to a cool<br \/>\n  area, begin cooling, and notify a supervisor. Give small sips of<br \/>\n  cool water only if the person is fully alert and able to<br \/>\n  swallow.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Heat stroke is a medical<br \/>\n  emergency. Warning signs may include:\n<\/p>\n<p>  Confusion or unusual behavior<\/p>\n<p>  Slurred speech or staggering<\/p>\n<p>  Vomiting or seizures<\/p>\n<p>  Loss of consciousness<\/p>\n<p>  Very high body temperature<\/p>\n<p>\n  If heat stroke or another<br \/>\n  severe heat illness is suspected:\n<\/p>\n<p>  Call 911 immediately.<\/p>\n<p>  Move the employee to shade or a cooler area.<\/p>\n<p>  Begin rapid cooling with cool water, cold wet towels, or<br \/>\n  another effective method.<\/p>\n<p>  Remove unnecessary outer clothing and personal protective<br \/>\n  equipment.<\/p>\n<p>  Stay with the employee until emergency responders arrive.<\/p>\n<p>  Do not send the employee home, allow them to drive, or leave<br \/>\n  them alone.<\/p>\n<p>  Provide responders with the campus, building, room, or<br \/>\n  outdoor location; the nearest entrance; and access instructions.<\/p>\n<p>  Do not give anything by mouth to a person who is confused,<br \/>\n  unconscious, vomiting, or unable to swallow safely.<\/p>\n<p>\n  Important Contact<br \/>\n  Information\n<\/p>\n<p>  Emergency: 911<\/p>\n<p>  Campus Safety, Non-emergency: 562-938-4910 or<br \/>\n  562-435-6711<\/p>\n<p>  Risk Management and Environmental Health &amp;<br \/>\n  Safety:\u00a0riskmanagement@lbcc.edu\u00a0562-938-4030<\/p>\n<p>\n  Program documents and<br \/>\n  Resources\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  For questions about heat illness prevention, training, workplace<br \/>\n  conditions, or required controls, contact Risk Management<br \/>\n  and Environmental Health &amp; Safety.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Long Beach Community College District is committed to protecting employees from heat-related injuries and illnesses.
