SANTA CLARA \u2014 Have you ever been in the zone<\/a>?<\/p>\n

I\u2019m talking about a state of consciousness where the world drops into slow motion, but you remain at full speed? Where everything else but the task at hand fades away, and you almost float above it all.<\/p>\n

Brock Purdy<\/a> is in that space to start the 2026 NFL season<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 49ers\u2019 quarterback was stellar in his team\u2019s first game of the season \u2014 a strange Down Under jaunt against the jetlagged Rams \u2014 and continued that form, with aplomb, in San Francisco\u2019s home opener at Levi\u2019s Stadium Sunday.<\/p>\n

If it weren\u2019t for the wholly inferior competition, the fact that the game was in Week 2 with minimal stakes, and the fact that Purdy has been \u2014 on the whole \u2014 exceptional throughout his career, one could argue the Niners\u2019 win against the Dolphins was the finest game of Purdy\u2019s career.<\/p>\n

After all, statistically, you won\u2019t find many better in NFL history.<\/p>\n

ESPN\u2019s proprietary QBR metric (different from traditional passer rating) had Purdy near-perfect: 99.7. That\u2019s the seventh-best performance ever registered by the stat.<\/p>\n

Yet when it comes to the true job of an NFL quarterback \u2014 which isn\u2019t just accruing numbers, but matriculating the ball down the field, keeping the offense ahead of the sticks, and sustaining rhythm \u2014 you won\u2019t find anyone doing it better.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlaying quarterback is dishing it out,\u201d Purdy said.<\/p>\n

As if it were really that simple, that easy.<\/p>\n

Purdy makes it look like it, though. This is a master at work. This is what NFL MVPs look like.<\/p>\n

Quarterback is the hardest position to play in all of professional sports \u2014 a black box of inscrutability that even billion-dollar organizations with endless resources can\u2019t quite crack. Even the Niners, led by a brilliant, offensive-minded head coach, have logged as many misses as hits at the position during Kyle Shanahan\u2019s tenure in Santa Clara.<\/p>\n

Purdy \u2014 the onetime final pick of the draft \u2014 clearly has it figured out the code to success.<\/p>\n

He mentioned feeling locked in during training camp, and boy, did he show it. That form has carried right into the regular season. As long as it continues, it will be near-impossible to pick against San Francisco.<\/p>\n

Now, to be fair to every other quarterback, Purdy was facing the deliberately dismal Dolphins. It\u2019ll be the shock of the year if Miami wins a game this season.<\/p>\n

But while the Dolphins played like a multi-directional FCS school traveling to Austin to play the University of Texas for a big check, the truth remains that they are, technically, an NFL roster. (Though I\u2019m not convinced the Longhorns wouldn\u2019t give them a run for their money.)<\/p>\n

\u201cWe knew the Dolphins, their whole story and stuff. (But) dude, it\u2019s the NFL. You never know. Anything can happen on Sundays,\u201d Purdy said. \u201cTheir scheme is tough. We had to be on top of our stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

Five touchdowns on the Niners\u2019 first five drives certainly qualifies as being on top of their \u201cstuff.\u201d Purdy rattling off 18 consecutive completions for 276 yards, two passing touchdowns, and a rushing score does, too. He finished the game 20 of 22 for 286 yards, those touchdowns, and a team-leading 30 yards rushing, a byproduct of sharp decisions against a Miami team that was trying to overcome a talent deficiency with sell-out schemes that Purdy sharply exploited.<\/p>\n

\u201cBrock was efficient all afternoon. He operated the pocket cleanly, took what the defense gave him, and kept us ahead of the chains,\u201d Shanahan said, clearly underselling it.<\/p>\n

Many who analyze Purdy still, somehow, view him as a glorified game manager \u2014 a no-agency avatar of Shanahan who can\u2019t do anything unless the coach dials up a pristine play call.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s hard not to feel sorry for the folks peddling that narrative \u2014 they clearly haven\u2019t watched him play.<\/p>\n

Per NFL tracking, Purdy completed all 10 of his downfield passes (10-plus yards past the line of scrimmage in the air) against the Dolphins for 211 yards and a touchdown \u2014 the most completions without an incompletion on downfield throws by any NFL quarterback since 2021.<\/p>\n

Does that sound like a check-down Charlie?<\/p>\n

And yet, ironically, Purdy\u2019s stated offseason goal was to behave more like a traditional \u201cgame manager\u201d \u2014 cutting down on the swashbuckling and keeping the offense on schedule. He\u2019s executing that balance so well that the same talking heads who call him a game manager in a pejorative sense will soon pivot to praising him as an elite game-changer.<\/p>\n

There might be wisdom in crowds, but not when the crowd evaluates quarterbacks.<\/p>\n

Again, it\u2019s an inscrutable position. But as Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart once said \u2014 and I\u2019m paraphrasing \u2014 \u201cI know good quarterbacking when I see it.\u201d (That\u2019s the quote, right?)<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how dialed in Purdy was Sunday: he even made broken plays look intentional. On a first-and-10 near midfield in the third quarter, Purdy dropped back only to find Mike Evans and Kyle Juszczyk occupying roughly the same patch of grass over the middle. Given the choice between a fullback (who misread the play and was supposed to break shallower) and a potential future Hall of Fame receiver, Purdy went with the latter.<\/p>\n

Juszczyk, who finished that drive with two catches, including a touchdown, admitted to riding a wave of panic as the ball sailed over his helmet \u2014 shifting from horror that he had blown the play to relief at a crisp 17-yard gain for Evans.<\/p>\n

Then again, as Juszczyk put it: \u201cI should never expect that, because apparently Brock doesn\u2019t throw incompletions anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJust intentional groundings,\u201d George Kittle, who joined Juszczyk at the post-game podium, cracked, pointing out that Purdy\u2019s lone second-half blip was a throwaway that drew a dubious penalty flag on his final snap of the game. (It arguably should have been defensive pass interference.)<\/p>\n

\u201cJust watching how he handles the ball\u2026 Quarterbacks without confidence simply aren\u2019t making that throw,\u201d Kittle said of the throw to Evans. \u201cAnd he\u2019s doing that all day.\u201d<\/p>\n

It goes far further than that. Juszczyk noted postgame that on Demarcus Robinson\u2019s deep touchdown strike in Week 1, the receiver was the fourth read on the progression \u2014 an \u201calert\u201d in 49ers terminology.<\/p>\n

San Francisco faced a one-read quarterback on Sunday. They once reached a Super Bowl with a passer fans labeled \u201cOne-Read Jimmy.\u201d Purdy, meanwhile, is actively hitting third and fourth options who were sent out essentially as decoys. If that isn\u2019t operating on a higher plane, nothing is.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s pretty sick,\u201d Kittle joked. \u201cMe and Juice are alerts a lot, and the fact that he\u2019s starting to see alerts \u2014 that\u2019s good for (us).\u201d<\/p>\n

And what\u2019s good for Kittle and Juice? Well, that\u2019s great for the 49ers.<\/p>\n
