Fresno State (2-1) defeated San Jose State (2-2) for the third consecutive time, beating the Spartans 26-10 and keeping the Valley Trophy in Fresno while improving its all-time series record to 47-39-3.<\/p>\n
San Jose State opened the scoring with a 45-yard field goal in the first quarter. Fresno State kicker Manaki Watanabe and the Bulldogs responded by connecting on two field goals in the second quarter, both from over 50 yards, putting the Bulldogs ahead 6-3.<\/p>\n
Ethan Tierney managed to pick off the Spartans in the end zone to prevent them from scoring with 16 seconds left in the first half.<\/p>\n
In the second half, Fresno State continued to add to its lead after Jordan Malau\u2019ulu returned a punt 68 yards, putting the \u2018Dogs in the red zone and setting up Jayden Mandal to find Josiah Freeman for an 18-yard touchdown to make it 13-3.<\/p>\n
Tierney came up with his second interception later in the quarter, picking off Luke Weaver and returning it 38 yards into San Jose State territory.<\/p>\n
The Spartans eventually managed to score early in the fourth quarter, cutting the Bulldogs\u2019 lead to 13-10.<\/p>\n
Fresno State responded with Watanabe putting up another field goal, this time from 44 yards, to extend the Bulldogs\u2019 lead to 16-10.<\/p>\n
Defensive backs Kiontre Harris and Simeon Harris both came up with big interceptions in the fourth quarter to help Fresno State regain possession. This led to Watanabe converting the second turnover into another field goal, hitting from 40 yards to make it 19-10.<\/p>\n
Running back Bryson Donelson put the game away for the Bulldogs with a big 36-yard touchdown run with 1:09 remaining, sealing Fresno State\u2019s 26-10 victory over San Jose State.<\/p>\n
Watanabe finished with four field goals, while Donelson led the Bulldogs with 57 rushing yards. Meanwhile, Mandal threw for 186 yards and one touchdown, while Freeman finished with six catches for 95 yards and a touchdown.<\/p>\n
With this victory, Fresno State keeps the Valley Trophy in Fresno for the next couple of years, as the Bulldogs and Spartans will not meet again until 2029.<\/p>\n
The Bulldogs return home next Saturday to host Rice University at Valley Children\u2019s Stadium.
