SANTA CLARA \u2014 You play<\/a> who is on your schedule.<\/p>\n

Even if the team on your schedule<\/a> forgot to show up.<\/p>\n

Or, worse yet, they did show up, but didn\u2019t have much to offer.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s too early to crown the 2026 San Francisco 49ers<\/a> as died-in-the-wool Super Bowl contenders or a juggernaut. (Not that many won\u2019t try.) But we can say this with certainty: The 49ers aren\u2019t just better than the Miami Dolphins.<\/p>\n

In fact, they operate in an entirely different echelon of competence.<\/p>\n

And boy, is there a big gap.<\/p>\n

San Francisco spent the first half kicking its feet up on the coffee table, watching Miami burn clock, and spotting the Dolphins a few chances to make something of this game. They still led 14-6 at the break because talent has a funny way of making inexperience (or incompetence) look silly.<\/p>\n

And even with that mess-around, it only took three quarters to turn the Dolphins into chum. Brock Purdy looked like he was playing against folding chairs during a Niners Saturday-night ballroom walk-thru, George Kittle broke loose for the first time this season, and the defense turned the second half into an unsanctioned mugging.<\/p>\n

Here are the studs and duds from Sunday\u2019s 35-13 dismantling of the teal:<\/p>\n

\ud83d\udcaa STUDS<\/p>\n

Brock Purdy, QB<\/p>\n

Nobody in the NFL makes the hardest job in sports look more like an afternoon toss-around in the park.<\/p>\n

Miami rolled up in man coverage, and Purdy knew what to do: run, run, run.<\/p>\n

When the Dolphins left open grass, he galloped right into it, including an 18-yard jaunt in the second quarter that had Miami defenders grasping at air.<\/p>\n

Purdy became the first 49er since Alex Smith in 2006 to put up 30-plus rushing yards, a ground score, and two passing touchdowns in a single game. His only true blemish all day was a Deebo Samuel drop on the third play from scrimmage; otherwise, he played clinical, ruthless football, finishing 20 of 22, for 287 yards passing, 30 yards rushing, and three touchdowns (two by air, one by ground).<\/p>\n

Gracen Halton, DT<\/p>\n

Halton was often unblockable, consistently beating Miami linemen to their spots and blowing up plays before they even developed. He blew up De\u2019Von Achane for a 1-yard gain, flushed Miami quarterback Malik Willis constantly, and lived in the backfield all afternoon.<\/p>\n

And considering the other 49ers\u2019 defensive tackles\u2019 current play, it was a game-changer.<\/p>\n

Dre Greenlaw, LB<\/p>\n

Despite a full year away from the Niners, Greenlaw hasn\u2019t lost a single drop of malice.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t run clinic-level coverage, but that\u2019s never the point with Greenlaw. He exists to deliver legal pain.<\/p>\n

When the front line did its job, Greenlaw arrived on scene like a guided missile, ensuring Miami\u2019s rushers stopped dead on impact.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s a tone-setter. A force-multiplier. We saw that on full display Sunday.<\/p>\n

Ji\u2019Ayir Brown, S<\/p>\n

Putting Brown in the box was a stroke of schematic common sense.<\/p>\n

He had a hiccup on kickoff coverage and missed a tackle or two, but his downhill edge support was pure gold Sunday. Brown snuffed Achane for a 1-yard loss at the goal line and played with more violence than your standard strongside linebacker.<\/p>\n

Something to think about moving forward.<\/p>\n

Marques Sigle, S<\/p>\n

Sigle looked like a man who treats teal like a bull treats the color red.<\/p>\n

He picked up a sack, destroyed a return man on special teams, and left a trail of dazed Miami jerseys wondering what hit them.<\/p>\n

Upton Stout, NB<\/p>\n

The second-year nickel is an absolute lunatic, and that\u2019s a compliment.<\/p>\n

Stout had a couple of negative moments \u2014 a late-game touchdown against, a moment when Achane made him miss in space, and a too-east give-up on a 23-yard completion \u2014 but he made Miami feel him everywhere else. He split a sack with Fred Warner, blew up another play inside the 5-yard line, had a tackle for loss off a blitz, and threw his body into traffic late in the first half to force a field goal.<\/p>\n

Is he volatile? Yes. Boy is he fun.<\/p>\n

George Kittle, TE<\/p>\n

It turns out playing tight end is easy when the defense forgets you exist.<\/p>\n

Miami inexplicably lost Kittle on the first drive of the second half, gifting him a 40-yard catch-and-run before letting him waltz into the end zone on a chip-and-release three plays later. His blocking wasn\u2019t vintage, but getting 50-plus yards and a touchdown on three snaps is plenty good. Adding 30 more yards on two other catches? Also good.<\/p>\n

\ud83d\udcc9 DUDS<\/p>\n

James Thompson, DT<\/p>\n

An afternoon spent wearing roller skates inside Levi\u2019s Stadium.<\/p>\n

Thompson got pushed around in base downs and failed to hold the point of attack near the goal line, getting washed away while Miami found rare daylight up the gut.<\/p>\n

Osa Odighizuwa, C.J. West, DT<\/p>\n

Whenever Halton caught a breather, the Niners\u2019 defensive gut leaked yards like a rusty pipe.<\/p>\n

Odighizuwa was washed out right next to Thompson on an Achane goal-line plunge, and West played with his pad level up around his chin for most of the game. Miami had one route to stay alive \u2014 running right down San Francisco\u2019s throat \u2014 and the Dolphins were simply too inept to keep doing it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"SANTA CLARA \u2014 You play who is on your schedule.
