A man wanted for murder died after a shootout with deputies in the Iowa Hill area, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said. <\/p>\n
Derek Spencer, 44, was killed around 4 a.m. Monday after he fired shots toward deputies, the sheriff’s office said.<\/p>\n
Placer deputies had been searching for Spencer since Sunday. A California Highway Patrol aircraft helped locate him using infrared technology in a heavily forested area, according to the sheriff’s office.<\/p>\n
Just before 2:30 a.m. Monday, members of the Placer County Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Team moved in. They made their way through what they described as steep, difficult terrain. The Sheriff’s Office said it took several hours to reach the location where Spencer was attempting to hide.<\/p>\n
Once they reached that location, deputies said the man, later identified as Spencer, fired several shots. That led to a standoff. During that time, authorities said Spencer was seen on drone footage starting two fires.<\/p>\n
Then at 4 a.m. Monday, Spencer again fired shots toward deputies from a berm he was hiding behind, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies returned fire, striking and killing Spencer.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Spencer was wanted after pointing a firearm at people in Placer County, in addition to other alleged felonies. The sheriff’s office said that when Spencer was found by deputies around 10:30 a.m. Sunday, he rammed a vehicle stolen in El Dorado County into one of their patrol vehicles and managed to get away.<\/p>\n
While searching for Spencer, investigators found a woman who had been shot and killed inside a home, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies believe Spencer was in this house earlier and shot the woman before running into the forest.<\/p>\n
When deputies found Spencer around 2:30 p.m. Sunday, he is believed to have shot at them and a sheriff’s office helicopter. Deputies lost sight of Spencer afterward until the Monday morning standoff.<\/p>\n
Spencer is also believed to have been involved with an armed carjacking on Saturday in El Dorado County, according to the Foresthill Fire Protection District and the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office.<\/p>\n
There is currently a perimeter at Iowa Hill Road at Grand View Avenue.<\/p>\n

KCRA 3 received a tip that Spencer was arrested in Sacramento County as early as last week. Court records show he was released from Sacramento County Jail on Thursday, Sept. 17.<\/p>\n
Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson Ed Igoe confirmed Spencer has been booked three times this month:<\/p>\n
Once by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office for felony vandalism, assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and resisting arrest. (Sept. 3)Once by the Folsom Police Department for burglary (Sept. 14)Once by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office for stealing a vehicle (Sept. 16)<\/p>\n
Spencer was released on bond for the sheriff’s office arrests on Sept. 3 and Sept. 16. <\/p>\n
