(KGET) &#8212; Prosecutors on Monday brought a charge of first-degree murder against a man accused of killing his girlfriend in late July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Alfonso Rosales-Ortiz, 34, had a not guilty plea entered on his behalf by a deputy public defender. He&#8217;s being held without bail and is due back in court Oct. 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Ariana Rangel Ortega, 31, was found unresponsive July 21 at a home on Monahan Street in southwest Bakersfield. She was taken to Mercy Hospital Southwest where she was pronounced dead the same day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Homicide detectives with the Bakersfield Police Department gathered evidence implicating Rosales-Ortiz, police said. The couple had a history of domestic violence incidents, according to a BPD release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Coroner&#8217;s officials said Ortega died of strangulation and blunt force injuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc.
