A mountain lion gave San Francisco officials and residents a major shock on Friday, September 18, when it was spotted wandering the Outer Sunset district around 7:30 am.

Several organizations—including the San Fransico Police Department, the San Francisco Zoo, and San Francisco Animal Care and Control—responded to the scene where the cougar gave them an hours-long standoff. At one point, the puma even charged at officials before darting into nearby bushes, where a second standoff began. Media and onlookers were repeatedly pushed back from the scene, but many news outlets, like @kpixtv, captured footage of the heart-racing moment.

Online viewers were just as fascinated with the wild animal encounter as those who were at the scene. Many, like @jsilva92, were also empathetic to the wild animal and its obvious fear in a threatening situation.

He wrote, “Poor buddy is just hungry and scared. Glad they got them out of the city.” In fact, San Francisco Animal Care and Control did so much more than that. The sedated puma got a full veterinary checkup and a cushy overnight stay before being transported to a much safer location.

The following day, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife released the still-sleepy cougar back into the wild. The wild cat was naturally shocked yet curious about the equipment around them, and the result was much cuter and calmer than its first encounter with officials on Friday.

That close-up camera angle was the money shot! The young cougar may have been confused and relaxed from his recent sedation, but there’s no question he is safer now, and very unlikely to end up back in the city.

San Francisco Mountain Lions

This is the second mountain lion sighting in San Francisco in less than a month. A few weeks ago, another cougar was seen near the Golden Gate Park’s Panhandle, but officials are unsure if the lion captured Friday could be the same one.

John Morgan of the Santa Cruz Puma Project explained to ActiveNorCal that this puma is almost certainly a young male. Two-year-old males leave their homes for the very first time, and many of them wander the Santa Cruz Mountains toward the Peninsula and San Francisco.

That is to say—this isn’t the first mountain lion spotted in the middle of San Francisco, and it isn’t likely to be the last, either.
