On Tuesday, the public will have an opportunity to hear about uses of force, vehicle pursuits, and other hot-button issues from the Oakland Police Department\u2019s managers and command staff at a citywide risk management meeting.<\/p>\n
The meeting will take place Sept. 22 at 5 p.m. at OPD\u2019s headquarters (455 7th St.). The purpose, according to a news release, is to \u201cexplain how OPD uses data to identify trends, assess risk, and evaluate departmental policies.\u201d<\/p>\n
During the presentation \u2014\u00a0OPD has already made a slide deck publicly available<\/a> \u2014 department leaders will provide historical context and trends related to the following:<\/p>\n Officers and non-sworn staff on leave<\/p>\n Dispatch, non-dispatch, and intelligence-led traffic stops<\/p>\n Use-of-force incidents<\/p>\n Community complaints of police misconduct<\/p>\n Vehicle chases<\/p>\n Crashes involving OPD vehicles<\/p>\n OPD is inviting community members to submit questions ahead of the meeting to OPDRiskManagement@oaklandca.gov<\/a>.<\/p>\n The meeting comes just ahead of a Sept. 29 court hearing in which OPD may finally be released from federal oversight. The department has been under the watch of a court-appointed monitor since 2003 as part of a settlement of the infamous \u201cRiders\u201d case, in which officers were accused of beating people, planting drugs, and lying. Last week, the monitor published a report<\/a> finding OPD had failed to complete a few internal misconduct investigations within the court-mandated deadline, possibly jeopardizing OPD\u2019s exit from federal oversight.<\/p>\n In recent weeks, alleged misconduct and crimes by several OPD officers have made headlines. In August, the department announced it had identified a sergeant who allegedly defrauded the department<\/a> of $38,000 in overtime. That same month, two officers who were disciplined for mishandling an internal affairs case sued the city<\/a>, saying OPD had blown legal deadlines to punish them.<\/p>\n Earlier this month, two other officers who served as pilots for OPD\u2019s helicopter unit were indicted<\/a> by a federal grand jury for allegedly defrauding the Federal Aviation Administration.
