ERIC PAUL ZAMORA                                                                            ezamora@fresnobee.com                                                                                        <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/fresno.legistar.com\/DepartmentDetail.aspx?ID=24367&amp;GUID=3F2858EB-369B-4203-B7B5-EF33E643E2AD&amp;Mode=MainBody\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">City Council allocated $1.7 million in state funds<\/a> for the upgrades on Thursday, August 17.<\/p>\n<p>More improvements part of project<\/p>\n<p>Additional improvements include accessible pedestrian signals, countdown pedestrian heads, reconstruction of all four curb ramps to meet current ADA standards, new striping, pavement repairs, and upgraded technology that will allow the city to remotely monitor and manage the traffic signal.<\/p>\n<p>The project will remove two existing sidewalk trees to clear visibility of the intersection and crosswalks. The city will replace the trees as part of the Urban Forest Management plan, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/fresno.legistar.com\/View.ashx?M=F&amp;ID=15848556&amp;GUID=278CFB94-E5A6-42E3-A4C2-08D6759E0FB0\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">environmental assessment.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>$1.74M project funded by state transportation dollars<\/p>\n<p>The council previously identified the intersection as a priority for Senate Bill 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, which allocates $5.4 billion annually to fix roads and highways across the state.<\/p>\n<p>The project is fully funded by SB1 transportation funds, at a total cost of around $1.74 million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough this intersection meets industry standards, we should always look for opportunities to make our streets safer,\u201d Perea said. \u201cPublic safety does not begin when an emergency happens.
