(KRON) — A giant sculpture symbolizing Mexican culture is being assembled at Oakland’s Fruitvale Transit Village.<\/p>\n
For the 31st annual D\u00eda de los Muertos Festival in Oakland, a sculpture called “La Catrina” is coming all the way from Mexico City, traveling more than 2,000 miles.<\/p>\n
The sculpture is handcrafted by Mexican artisans and “La Catrina’s” design represents remembrance, cultural pride and belonging. Organizers say her journey also reflects the trip so many families have taken while immigrating to the United States, while carrying their culture and traditions with them.<\/p>\n
The sculpture arrived Tuesday morning and will be on public display on October 1, welcoming visitors before becoming a centerpiece of the D\u00eda de los Muertos Festival on November 1. The sculpture is expected to be the tallest Catrina in the U.S. when it’s featured at the festival.<\/p>\n
She is one of the most recognized symbols of D\u00eda de los Muertos and organizers say La Catrina stands for remembrance, the celebration of life, and the enduring connection between generations.<\/p>\n
The festival brings together more than 100,00 visitors every year in the heart of Fruitvale. This year’s theme is, “La Lucha Contin\u00faa: Aqu\u00ed estamos y no nos vamos,” which means “The Struggle Continues: We Are Here and We’re Not Leaving.”<\/p>\n
It will take place at Fruitvale Village on November 1 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.<\/p>\n
