Orange County is facing a financial dilemma as city and county leaders struggle to fund raises for law enforcement amid growing budget deficits. <\/p>\n
Historically, sheriff deputies and local police departments have dominated municipal budgets, often comprising over half of annual general fund spending. However, stagnant or shrinking tax revenues and rising costs have created a challenging financial landscape.<\/p>\n
Orange County Sheriff John Mina recently requested an 11% budget increase for the upcoming fiscal year, scaling down from an initial 20% increase request. Mina’s revised proposal seeks $470 million, with $364 million allocated for personnel. Despite the need for more deputies due to the county’s growing population, only two of the 27 new positions requested are covered in the current budget proposal.
