The Valley Health Center campus at 1410 S. Bascom Ave. opens Sept. 28 and will provide adult medicine, urgent care, pediatric primary care, dental care, obstetrics and gynecology, behavioral health care and more. The facility features large windows that offer sweeping views of San Jose\u2019s rolling hills.<\/p>\n

Bookended by multiple apartment complexes and a stone\u2019s throw from the VTA Bascom station, officials said the location makes services accessible for thousands of county residents \u2014 including 11,000 households within walking distance of the clinic.<\/p>\n
\u201cI love the accessibility of this, which is what we\u2019re all about. It doesn\u2019t matter how great your services are if people cannot get to the facility,\u201d Supervisor Susan Ellenberg, whose District 4 includes the new clinic, told San Jos\u00e9 Spotlight. \u201cThere\u2019s a tremendous range of services here. It allows us to spread more, so that patients are not having to wait months for appointments.\u201d<\/p>\n

Construction of the facility took four years, which transformed the former commercial complex into a 10-story hospital building. The county originally leased<\/a> the space from HSRE-PMB San Jose<\/a>, but decided to purchase the site from the LLC in January for $340 million, financed through a 30-year revenue bond. Officials said the purchase will save $112 million in the county\u2019s already-strained budget<\/a>\u00a0over the next three decades.<\/p>\n The county expects to pay off the facility\u2019s 30-year revenue bond with $20 million per year, compared to the $25.5 million officials would have paid per year under the previous 30-year lease-to-rent agreement.<\/p>\n \u201cWe have continued to make thoughtful investments in our public healthcare delivery infrastructure with an eye toward the long-term health and well-being of our system, which represents the long-term health and well-being of every resident in Santa Clara County,\u201d County Executive James Williams said at a Tuesday news conference celebrating the clinic\u2019s upcoming opening.<\/p>\n The county has the second largest public hospital system in the state, comprised of four hospitals and 14 other clinics. The clinics alone see 1.3 million patients a year, and every 11 minutes someone is transported to one of the county\u2019s hospitals. It\u2019s also the only option for low-income and uninsured patients.<\/p>\n County Chief Operating Officer Greta Hansen said the San Jose-Campbell clinic is part of the county\u2019s larger vision to provide integrated and accessible care to all residents so they can get as many of their needs met in one location.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re not simply opening a new clinic, we are building healthcare infrastructure for the future, meeting the needs of patients today while creating the capacity to serve future generations of county residents,\u201d Hansen said at the news conference.<\/p>\n Earlier this month, the county nearly doubled emergency beds<\/a> at Regional Medical Center, East San Jose\u2019s only hospital. The county acquired Regional last year from a corporate owner that had downgraded trauma, heart attack and stroke care<\/a> and shuttered its maternity ward<\/a>, leaving residents with sparser options for care.<\/p>\n \u201cThis vision is bigger than one clinic.
