The Carpenter Performing Arts Center, 6200 E. Atherton St., is putting jazz front and center this fall with two intimate performances that showcase vastly different sides of the genre.

First, Grammy Award-nominated vocalist Tierney Sutton will join pianist Tamir Hendelman for an evening of inventive interpretations of jazz standards and contemporary favorites, followed shortly after by vocalist Gretchen Parlato, whose atmospheric blend of jazz and soul pushes the form in an even more contemporary direction.

Jazz will get the intimate cabaret treatment next week, as Sutton joins Hendelman at 7 p.m. Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, with both shows presented as part of the Carpenter Center’s Cabaret Series.

Sutton and Hendelman will bring fresh interpretations to songs associated with composers and artists such as George Gershwin, Antônio Carlos Jobim, Johnny Mercer, Peggy Lee and Paul Simon.

Sutton, a nine-time Grammy Award nominee, is known for her jazz interpretations and longtime vocal work with her ensemble, while Hendelman is a celebrated pianist and arranger who has performed with artists like Barbra Streisand and Natalie Cole.

The Cabaret Series offers a close-up concert experience, with table seating arranged directly on the Carpenter Center stage, less than 40 feet from the performers.

Tickets start at $59 for this concert, with dinner available as an add-on.

Then, on Oct. 2, vocalist Parlato will bring her distinctive musical blend to the stage, performing songs from her forthcoming album “The Wise Ones.”

Parlato has built a reputation for a highly individual approach to jazz, and her new material continues that tradition while expanding into singer-songwriter territory.

The album features collaborations with Robert Glasper, Gerald Clayton, Amber Navran of Moonchild and Meshell Ndegeocello.

For this Long Beach performance, Parlato will be joined by longtime collaborators Alan Hampton on bass, guitar and vocals, and Mark Guiliana on drums, with Gerald Clayton on piano.

Parlato’s performance will begin at 8 p.m.

For more information about both events, go to carpenterarts.org.

‘Mount Grungemore’

Who’s on your Mount Rushmore of musicians?

For one night next month, Gaslamp Long Beach will offer its answer by turning back the clock to the heyday of ’90s music — particularly the “grunge” genre — with “Mount Grungemore,” a live tribute showcase of four bands.

During the Oct. 10 show, Vitalogy will pay tribute to Pearl Jam, Nirvanish will channel Nirvana, Memory Layne will take on Alice in Chains and Spoonmen will bring the music of Soundgarden to the stage.

These four tribute acts cover a potent stretch of the grunge canon, from Pearl Jam’s arena-sized rock and Nirvana’s raw, punk-influenced sound to Alice in Chains’ darker metal edge and Soundgarden’s psychedelic-tinged approach.

Gaslamp has hosted grunge tributes before, but it’s nice to have these four bands playing the same bill.

“Mount Grungemore” will begin at 7 p.m. at Gaslamp Long Beach, 6251 Pacific Coast Highway. Dinner reservations are available.
