A man was sentenced Thursday for his role in a pair of home invasion robberies in East County San Diego nearly a decade ago, one of which ended in the death of his 15-year-old accomplice.

Joshua Manu Story was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus decades after being convicted on 21 felony counts, including robbery, kidnapping for ransom and battery with serious bodily injury.

Many of the charges stemmed from a February 2017 home invasion on Edding Drive in Lemon Grove when Manu and his 15-year-old cousin, Derrick Harris, entered the home.

Homicide investigators said the homeowner used one of the intruders’ guns to shoot Harris in the torso, killing him. The homeowner’s son was also injured in the shooting.

At the time, investigators said Harris and a second suspect targeted the home.

“The suspects intentionally came to this home but we don’t believe the victims knew the suspects,” SDSO Homicide Detective Kenn Nelson said at the time of the home invasion.

Multiple home security cameras in the area, including a door bell camera, appeared to show that a second suspect fled in a car parked near the house.

Manu was later identified and arrested two years later.

Manu’s attorney argued he should only be sentenced on the home invasion and robbery charges, but the judge disagreed. Manu has 60 days to appeal the sentencing.

About a dozen of Manu’s family members and friends were in the courtroom for his sentencing at the El Cajon courthouse. As he was escorted out at the end of the hearing, he turned and told them he loved them.
