La Costa Canyon’s Luke Labrum passes during the summer passing league tournament at La Costa Canyon High School on Saturday, July 11, 2026 in Carlsbad, California. (Meg McLaughlin / The San Diego Union-Tribune)

It wasn’t always perfect spirals, long completions and touchdowns for Dax Labrum.

”In the fourth grade, I was the right guard and an outside linebacker,” said Labrum, now the quarterback for No. 6-ranked and 5-0 Santa Fe Christian. “At one of our games, we were down to 10 guys, and didn’t have a quarterback.

“The coach asked who wanted to play the position, and nobody stepped up. So I volunteered.

“And I was terrible.”

Things have changed since then.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Labrum threw for 3,106 yards and 36 touchdowns last season as Santa Fe Christian went 13-1 and won the San Diego Section Division 2 championship before losing to Arcadia Rio Hondo Prep in the Southern California Regionals.

SFC is off to a 5-0 start this season with Labrum passing for 1,271 yards and 17 TDs without an interception.

His “little” brother, 6-foot-6 Luke, is a sophomore quarterback at No. 5-ranked La Costa Canyon.

Luke Labrum, who is splitting time with senior Jackson Miller, has thrown for 759 yards and five TDs.

Dax Labrum chose to attend SFC because of his friends. Brother Luke chose LCC because there was the opportunity to play as a sophomore.

The brothers love each other, but the two rarely see each other on weekdays.

“I only see him a couple of minutes a day,” Dax said. “We’re at different schools; we have different schedules.”

Things change on the weekends.

”It would be great to see him more, but on Saturdays and Sundays we watch each other’s games,” Luke Labrum said. “We break things down. We have fun watching each other. He’s the veteran and really helps me. I especially learn from my mistakes.

“I used to catch for him when he wanted to throw. He has led the way.”

The Labrum brothers have been tutored by quarterback guru Jose Mohler, founder of Left Coast Athletix. Dax also has the advantage of working with Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees, who is an assistant at SFC.

“Both are really enthusiastic about playing quarterback,” Mohler said. “They’re infatuated with seeing the ball fly. Both are high-IQ throwers. They both have great eyes, great feet. Both are fluid.

“They realize playing quarterback is as much mental as it is physical. The position is more than just throwing a ball. They absorb the game. They ask the right questions.”

Dax Labrum played JV football as a freshman, but it was clear he was “a quarterback and a leader,” said SFC coach Jon Wallace.

“He was the varsity backup as a sophomore, but our starter got hurt and Dax has been the starter ever since.”

For his career, Dax Labrum has completed 377 of 586 passes for 6,015 yards and 74 TDs with just 10 interceptions. SFC has won 18 of its last 19 games and 27 of the last 30.

Dax will play collegiately at Cornell. Luke already has an offer to play at San Diego State.

”Luke has room to grow and develop,” said La Costa Canyon coach Sean Sovacool. “His hands are huge and his feet are awesome. We challenge our players, and Luke wants to be coached. He’s a competitor who wants to be the best.”

Said Mohler: “Luke has the advantage of Dax walking the path before him. Both have a high ceiling.”

And both Labrum brothers have their teams poised for the playoffs.

Should LCC run the gauntlet and win the Avocado West League, finishing ahead of No. 1 Carlsbad, No. 4 Mission Hills, No. 5 LCC, No. 8 San Marcos and No. 9 Torrey Pines, the Mavericks would most certainly be an Open Division team for the playoffs. A loss or two would put them in Division 1.

Should SFC sweep the Coastal League, with a win already over Army-Navy, a forfeit win over La Jolla Country Day and an upcoming nonleague game next Thursday with Los Angeles King/Drew, the Eagles could slip into Division 1 for the postseason.

Creative pairing could match SFC and LCC in the first round of the playoffs.

“Wouldn’t that be something?” Wallace said. “Brother vs. brother.”

It wasn’t always perfect spirals, long completions and touchdowns for Dax Labrum. ”In the fourth grade, I was…

[28
7,4779,9378,4601,2044,186668,181,12564,3054,12565,74,84,76,75,127,1696
post-474722","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-diego","tag-california","tag-cardiff-by-the-sea","tag-carlsbad","tag-encinitas","tag-high-school-sports","tag-la-costa","tag-latest-headlines","tag-leucadia","tag-north-county","tag-olivenhain","tag-san-diego","tag-san-diego-county","tag-san-diego-headlines","tag-san-diego-news","tag-sports","tag-top-stories-sdut
["GET
