Compared with the same period last year, Escobar said, AltaMed recorded a nearly 28% increase in gastrointestinal illnesses and a 36% increase in depression diagnoses.

“Respiratory diagnoses increased 19.9%, Eye and upper airway irritation increased 24.2%,” Escobar said.

Doctors say one of the biggest challenges remains the uncertainty surrounding what residents may have been exposed to during and after the fire. Escobar said the precise chemical makeup of substances released into the air and soil has not been determined.

“I still don’t know what exactly my patients were exposed to. We can surmise, we can guess, but I still don’t know yet,” Escobar said.

The lack of answers has made it difficult to determine long-term care for affected residents, doctors said. According to Herrera, the impacts have extended beyond her health and contributed to the loss of her job.

“If there’s any way to really provide the same resources and relief that other disasters have gotten, I think that would bring justice to our community that we deserve,” Herrera said.

The cause of the massive June fire at a Boyle Heights cold-storage warehouse remains officially undetermined, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

According to Escobar, the effects of the fire are likely to continue long after the flames have been extinguished and cleanup efforts are completed.

“The fire may be extinguished, the cleanup may be officially over, but the effects are still persisting and we need to understand those moving forward over the next several year,” Escobar said.

During a community discussion, California Assemblymember Mark Gonzalez addressed Assembly Bill 817, legislation he authored that would prohibit the construction of new cold-storage facilities unless the owner or lessee establishes a dedicated emergency contingency fund.

AltaMed data also showed an increase in anxiety, depression and symptoms associated with traumatic stress following the fire and related shelter-in-place orders. Many residents were isolated in their homes during hot weather and faced uncertainty about the situation, according to doctors. Health providers said those experiences have affected residents’ sleep and overall well-being, and that the mental health impacts remain evident 100 days after the fire.

Copyright © 2026 KABC Television, LLC.
