Douglas Trobaugh, general manager of El Camino Memorial Park and Sorrento Valley Chapel, who has been with the company for 41 years, talked about the longevity, ties to the community, and services that have been available to San Diegans during what are often the most difficult moments of their lives.

Q: What have been the keys to El Camino Memorial Park and Sorrento Valley Chapel’s success in San Diego since its founding in 1960?

Trobaugh: Since its founding in 1960, one of the keys to the success of El Camino Memorial Park and Sorrento Valley Chapel has been the culture we strive to create among our staff and within ourselves. We believe in being caring, compassionate, understanding, and, most importantly, listening to the families we serve.

Every family is different, and their needs continue to change over time. We listen to what families want and do our best to meet those needs in a meaningful and respectful way. We understand that our role is not simply to provide a service, but to be there for families during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

As the community and the needs of the families we serve change, we change with them. Our commitment to listening, adapting, and providing compassionate care has helped us remain a trusted part of the San Diego community for generations.

Q: How does Dignity Memorial approach the various cultural needs of San Diegans as they work with you to plan their services?

Dignity Memorial understands that every family has unique cultural, religious, and personal traditions that are important when planning a service. Our at-need counselors and pre-need counselors work closely with families to understand and advise them on the cultural and religious needs that may be part of their arrangements.

Most importantly, we listen to each family. We take the time to understand their wishes, traditions, and expectations, and then work to provide the best possible service by using all of the resources and avenues available to us. Our goal is to honor each family’s individual beliefs and traditions while helping them create a meaningful and respectful service for their loved one.

Q: Death is often unexpected. What advice would you give for preplanning funeral services, memorial services or cremation?

Trobaugh: We would hope that every family experiencing an unexpected death has the comfort of knowing that their loved one has already made their pre-need arrangements. When arrangements are made in advance, the family has clear directives and a better understanding of their loved one’s wishes, which can make an incredibly difficult time a little easier.

Unfortunately, when a death is unexpected and no preplanning has been done, families are often left to make important decisions without any direction. In my experience, I have sat with families who were not even sure what their loved one wanted—whether they preferred cremation or burial, whether they wanted a funeral or memorial service, or even if they wanted a service at all.

That is why I encourage families to have these conversations and make their wishes known ahead of time. Preplanning is not just about making arrangements; it is about giving your family guidance and peace of mind during a time when making difficult decisions can be overwhelming.

Q: What are the different venues that Dignity Memorial has to offer for different types of services and accommodations?

When it comes to choosing a venue or type of service for a funeral, memorial service, or celebration of life, I would love to say, “Whatever the family wants, we can arrange.” Every family is different, and we believe the service should reflect the wishes, traditions, and personality of the person who has passed.

Traditionally, services can be held in a place of worship, at one of our mortuary chapels, at the graveside, or even in the family’s home. We can also help arrange a celebration of life at a park or another special location that held meaning for the deceased and their family.

Our role is to listen to the family, understand what is important to them, and then help make those wishes possible. Whether they choose a traditional funeral service, a memorial service, a celebration of life, or a more private gathering, we want families to know that they have options and that we will work with them to create a meaningful and personalized experience.

Q: What are some of the community events that Dignity Memorial typically holds and how else do you engage with the community?

Trobaugh: Dignity Memorial is proud to be involved in the community throughout the year. We host and participate in a variety of community, religious, military, and cultural events that bring families and members of the community together.

Some of these events include Memorial Day observances, All Souls’ Day, military tributes, religious celebrations, cultural events, and many other special gatherings throughout the year. These events give us an opportunity to honor those who have passed, support their families, and build meaningful relationships within the communities we serve.

We encourage families and community members to follow our social media postings and other media outlets to learn about our upcoming events. There are many exciting and meaningful events throughout the year, and we welcome everyone to join us.

For more information, call 858-453-2121 or visit www.dignitymemorial.com

Dignity Memorial is located at 5600 Carroll Canyon Rd., San Diego, 92121.

— Business Spotlight features enterprises that support this publication.

Designed with the coast in mind, Windansea includes wave-inspired columbaria and sandstone walkways with subtle blue accents.
